I hardly post on microblogging apps despite writing about them constantly for the past several years. Something about the tweet format just doesn't register as a conversation in my mind. It feels like yapping into the void in a way that Discord, Cohost (RIP), and even phpBB forums don't.

This is one of the worst violations of research ethics I've ever seen. Manipulating people in online communities using deception, without consent, is not "low risk" and, as evidenced by the discourse in this Reddit post, resulted in harm. Great thread from Sarah, and I have additional thoughts. 🧵

The trope that universities are "dependent" on the federal government fundamentally misunderstands how vital this partnership has been for the US. The private sector can't replace it. If we kill it, we're all worse off. From @donmoyn.bsky.social and me: donmoynihan.substack.com/p/are-univer...
Moreover, these funds serve the public interest. Universities do things private companies with research capacities cannot: train research talent, conduct basic research with uncertain payoffs, and distribute knowledge as a public good. And the rewards have been enormous. Everything from the internet to pharmaceutical and health care innovations evolved from such investments. We are richer and healthier for the investment.

If you study networks, or have been stuck listening to people who study networks for long enough (sorry to my loved ones), you may have heard that open triads – V shapes – in social networks tend to turn into closed triangles. But why does this happen? In part, because people repost each other.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Hell. You are describing hell. Nobody wants an “interactive and engaging” dishwasher. They just want their dishes cleaned. www.forbes.com/sites/bernar...
Across all industries, organizations are rapidly embracing generative AI. Among them, makers of home appliances like fridges and ovens. Generative AI in your oven? Why not? Ater all, AI has been creeping into our homes for years (think smart lightbulbs and Alexa) – but thanks to generative AI, these interactions will become even more human and more personal.
Imagine, for example, asking your washing machine whether it’s safe to wash a beloved item of clothing on a certain setting – literally, asking it out loud or via an app. Or you could say to your fridge, “Hey, when am I going to run out of milk?” and it’ll tell you. Integrating generative AI into everyday products could lead to a new era of smart appliances that are not only more adaptive to our needs but also more interactive and engaging.

I get the game design argument for contact damage but it's just not very fun. Actual attack hitboxes add so much to any action game. I'm supposed to believe my guy is a cool powerful hero and yet he loses half his life bar and is flung across the screen simply by touching a snake? Yeah, sure.

Don't forget: Just like most awards shows, The Game Awards is entirely an industry operation designed to advertise games, mostly AAA games. I was happy to see Balatro nominated, but it felt like an appeasement. There's hundreds of fantastic indie games with awesome devs that go ignored by TGA.

A reason students struggle with functions: they aren't taught the difference between a parameter and an argument. If I tell a student f(x) = 2x + 1, and then ask them what f(x + 4) is, they don't realize the first x is a placeholder in the definition and the second x is a variable in an expression.
