What does the Senate permitting deal mean for US climate emissions? Some early modeling and several experts told me + @leslieatlarge.bsky.social the reforms are likely to slash US greenhouse gas emissions. Full story @bloomberg.com, with gift link: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

What the Senate Permitting Deal Means for US Climate Emissions
Experts say the bill, which would speed clean-energy and fossil-fuel projects alike, would probably reduce greenhouse gas emissions overall.

Thread on solar decommissioning 1/n insideclimatenews.org/news/2501202...
1. For Copper Box Solar, Engie is required to submit a decommissioning plan and secure a surety bond for costs before construction begins. This is common. Engie's plan revolves around soil preservation - bare minimum of grading (which is expensive anyway and which modern racking techniques avoid), native vegetative cover, and the ability to return the land to crop production at end of project live in around 30 years if the landowner desires.
2. While rules vary from place to place, overwhelmingly the rules are clear that "The developer or the owner is responsible for restoring the land once a project is no longer operating"

hey I heard you like sankey diagrams that show huge populations making terrible decisions
A very complicated Sankey diagram showing the usage of electricity in the United States. Or the left are sources of energy and on the right are consumers, so, for example, nuclear is on the left and residential is on the right. Petroleum dominates.

There is very little in this world that makes me more cynical about our ability to deal with climate change (or do anything hard, really) than the people who were chanting "shame" at the Berkeley City Council meeting just now because the City Council approved a bike lane in July

Bike lanes increase the number of cyclists, reduce air pollution and improve community health, reduce street noise, help fight climate change, and according to every study are either neutral on or bring more money to adjacent businesses.

A lot of ink has been spilled on RCP-8.5, but its worth pausing and celebrating just how dramatically the high-end tail of emissions scenarios has changed over ~15 years. Genuine technological and policy progress on climate, reflected in the set of futures we can imagine

Spend any time on Nextdoor in SF and it is abundantly clear that residents will do anything in their power to stop anything & everything remotely transit related (even if it would *help* car drivers, like say, dedicated rapid bus lanes). It's utterly depressing.

a meme utilizing a scene from a classic 1990s Japanese anime TV series The Brave Fighter of Sun Fighbird in a scene wherein the humanoid character erroneously identifies a butterfly as a pigeon. The character with dark hair, glasses, and a white jacket with a red collar, is looking towards a yellow butterfly on the right side of the frame with a confused yet enthusiastic expression, gesturing toward it with an open palm. Superimposed white, bold text labels the man as "REFLECTING POOL" and the butterfly as "ALGAE". At the bottom of the image, the caption reads, "IS THIS CARBON DIOXIDE REMOVAL?"
