Bluesky should adopt "tweeting" because we are in the sky that's blue and birds can fly and they tweet. We tweet. Yes Also since twitter died and was resurrected here, that's also a reason.

I'm now at a higher follower count than I was even at my peak at Twitter, and my core observation is that this is a platform that rewards authentic engagement. I WORKED to build a Twitter audience (for good reason-- it materially helped my organizing at the time), and it was work that felt gross.

Why ABA is not a good approach for autistic kids: "Dig deeper. What is going on with the child underneath this behavior? What are the child's strengths, their challenges in this context—their needs? What would it look like to truly support them?" by LearnPlayThrive: www.facebook.com/megproctorOT...

Vaccines do not cause autism. A small study in 1998 suggested a link between vaccinations and autism spectrum disorder. The study was reviewed further and retracted. In addition, the author's medical license was revoked due to falsified information.

Yes, you did label people when your were younger too… Just instead of Autism/ADHD/etc., they were labelled “disruptive”, “stupid”, “difficult”, “problems”, and all sorts of slurs (even more than they are today).

I don't understand why people are still using X. If you are worried about losing an established network audience, some real numbers: I had 30K+ followers there and I have 13K here--the engagement is the same, if not better, here. Re-build. You don't *need* anything Muskrat's empire offers.

I hate how Autistic burnout is an overwhelming wave of revulsion. No, I don't want to go to work today. It doesn't just feel hard, it feels impossible. No, I don't want to go to school today. You're asking me to lift more than I can carry. But our culture doesn't care about disability so we go on

Started watching four episodes of vintage anime (Sailor Moon, Patlabor, Slayers, Gundam) every week with Discord friends and can't stress enough how watching fun stuff with online friends is a low-cost, low-effort way to help you feel better about shit. Can't recommend it enough.

But let's say sexual harassment is a manifestation of one's autism. That actually has some loose credibility. We learn differently, therefore we might not realize someone is expressing discomfort. That's as close as sexual harassment as an autistic trait gets.

When you see an autistic meltdown over a "small thing", usually it's not that one thing that caused the meltdown, usually it's just the final straw amongst a lot of many other issues that piled up (And even when it really is over a "small thing", it may not be small to them)

totally anecdotal, but i feel like it's less that autism is suddenly rising, and more that we just didn't consider the fact that your grandpa dedicating three rooms of his house to model trains was anything but neurotypical

my autistic self does not understand friendship degradation, honestly I can go years without seeing people and still feel the same. also, i usually tend to go all in on friendships, and feel much closer to certain people than I actually am!

We really need to change the language around autism. We do not "suffer from autism spectrum disorder." Yes, being autistic comes with a myriad of different difficulties but also strengths... "Autism" isn't an insult. I keep hearing kids/teens using "Autistic" as an insult.

Autistic people making jokes about THEIR OWN autism/autistic experiences isn't making light of or making fun of autism It's often done to help spread awareness. It can also be a coping mechanism. It can also be so other autistics who relate can have a laugh and feel less alone

Piggybacking off another post I read on here. With all the disinformation about autism about to come out, I want to point out that it's genetic. My father, my father's brother, and myself. It's not vaccines, or anything else. The science shows that it's genetics. #autism #ASD

Since the bottom feeders at Autism Speaks have found their way to BlueSky here is the heads up for those unaware that they are *loathed* in the Autism community for good reason
Before you donate to Autism Speaks, Consider the facts:

Very little money donated to Autism Speaks goes toward helping autistic people and families.
Only 1% of Autism Speaks' budget goes towards the "Family Service" grants that are the organization's means of funding services.

Autism Speaks spends 20x as much—20%-on fundraising. Although Autism Speaks has not prioritized services with a practical impact for families and individuals in its budget, its rates of executive pay are the highest in the autism world: some salaries exceed $600,000 a year.

Autism Speaks talks about us without us.
Autism Speaks has only 1 autistic person out of a total of 28 individuals on its Board of Directors.
By contrast, 23 out of 28 board members represent major corporations, including current and former CEOs and senior executives of PayPal, Goldman Sachs, White Castle, FX Networks, Virgin Mobile, e Bay, AMC Networks, L'Oreal, CBS, SiriusXM, American Express, S.C. Johnson, and Royal Bank of Scotland.

Autism Speaks' fundraising strategies promote fear, stigma, and prejudice against autistic people.
Autism Speaks uses its platform and advertising budget to portray autism and autistic people as mysterious and frightening. Their fundraising tactics increase stigma and create barriers to the inclusion of autistic people in our communities.

Instead, donate to organizations that help autistic people:
Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) provides support, community, and public policy advocacy, by and for people on the autism spectrum.
autisticadvocacy.org

Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network (AWN) seeks to share information which works to build acceptance and understanding of disability, while dispelling stereotypes and misinformation which
perpetuate unnecessary fears surrounding an autism diagnosis.
awnnetwork.org

Self Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE) works to ensure that people with disabilities are treated as equals and are given the same decisions, choices, rights, responsibilities, and chance to speak
up to empower themselves as everyone else.
