A bead of sweat trails down my forehead as I walk towards the door. What in the world could be so urgent at four pm on a Monday? I have half a mind to chew out whoever’s on the other side of that door. Probably more missionaries trying to convince me to join their church or some salesman peddling insurance I have no need for.

I throw the door open with a bag, my protest already on my lips. “No, I have no interest in accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and– Kira?”
The sight of her makes me freeze. She looks so put together that I’m suddenly embarrassed to be greeting her in sweats and a tank top. God, what the hell is it about this girl? Okay, it definitely doesn’t hurt that her short pumps and navy pencil skirt are making her legs look fantastic, but I completely forget how to function around her.

Stage one of the Rot, common in their line of work. They had been whalers—still were, presumably—and time ashore without work was brutal. Time sick was even worse. They had cut the heating to keep food on the table. To protect him. They had thought Al hadn’t understood what was happening, but he had.
The factory foreman had made him crawl under the roaring boiler to stick his hand between the cogs and clear up jamming. He’d had to exhale fully to fit under the tightest spots, bumping his head when he turned. It had only been for a month, but he’d had nightmares of being buried alive ever since. That was part of why he’d eventually gone to the public church schools, studying for the University’s Apprentice exam, learning reading, reasoning, rhetoric.
He had been nothing back then. Just another idiot with a dream, barely seventeen and flush with pride. He had told his parents he wouldn’t go on that last whaling tour, had shown them his acceptance letter. The proudest day of his life. The most shameful day of theirs.
“Don’t think you’re better than us,” mother had said. “We fed you, clothed you, and put a roof over your head, and you piss your life away on pride?”
Al picked up his pace.

Jacqueline Lamont likes control.
She controls her life, her career, and her emotions by one guiding principle: attachments are dangerous.
Fortunately, her career as a well-known folk singer makes that easy. Jacqueline lives out of tour buses and hotels, drifting from town to town and lover to lover, never staying long enough to belong anywhere. She’s happier that way—or so she tells herself.
Then a phone call rips her off the road, sending her back to a family she long believed had abandoned her and to a life she never meant to return to.
Back in Toronto, Jacqueline struggles to find her footing and maintain any semblance of control. Especially when she keeps running into a charming young nurse who looks oddly familiar and seems determined to insert herself into Jacqueline’s carefully contained life.
Shannon MacCartney is everything Jacqueline tries to avoid: rooted and compassionate. Worse yet, she has an unsettling ability to see past Jacqueline’s raised eyebrows, biting remarks, and relentless need for control.

Jacqueline’s fingers twisted the glass by its stem. She liked gin. Its taste was clean, sharp, and uncomplicated—exactly what Jacqueline liked in her drinks and her women.
She lifted an eyebrow at the waitress. Then her indifferent gaze followed the subtle tilt of the server’s head until it landed on the woman who’d sent the drink.
Next came the gesture—a single red rose. Jacqueline toyed with her silently. She lifted the rose, inhaled its scent, then set it back on the table. Her expression barely shifted, but it was enough.
Step two…
The woman found her courage and approached Jacqueline’s table. She parted her lips to speak, but Jacqueline’s hard amber stare stopped her mid-breath. Jacqueline rose and eyed the woman carefully. The way you would evaluate a cut of meat at the butcher’s counter.
The smile on the woman’s face faded, taking her confidence along with it.
An eyebrow arched, a twitch of her lips before Jacqueline, in a practised, smooth voice, whispered, “Not here.”

“Does she think that east is west in metric?” Izzy asked, growing increasingly rattled.
“Turn left.”
“But there’s no left!” Izzy pleaded almost as if to herself. “I can’t turn left!” she glared at the GPS.
“Recalculating…”
“I swear to god, if she says turn left, I am going…”

In the twenty years since the vampires rose up out of the earth, Corado hasn’t done too bad for himself. He’s still alive, for one, and he’s got a lucrative trade as a nightrunner smuggling people beneath the vampiric horde that blots out the sky each night. It's dangerous work, but enough to get a roof over his head and a bottle in his hand at the end of the day. That’s pretty good for life under the vampires.

Then an attack from the horde leaves him stuck in the desert, alone with a newly-orphaned boy, and his luck finally dries up. He resolves to find what remains of the boy’s family and put it all behind him—but instead of taking him off Corado’s hands, his so-called “family” offers a new deal: escort them to the vampiric capital in exchange for a veritable fortune.

Corado knows he shouldn’t. It’s a long, dangerous route, and the group has a smack of sedition to them that he knows firsthand to be a quick way to a bloody death.

It is a hell of a lot of money, though.
