#AwesomeCharacters Most of my characters need hugs. Some of the MCs are the kind that need a hug so bad actually receiving one might break them a little bit, though. I do have Finn & Jax, in other books, who are rather huggable w/ dad-friend energy & would be comfortable in 'free hugs' t-shirts

I tumble outside, quick, he fires another shot, missing me, hitting the shovel which stays in place, if not slightly tilted.
I stand, jump as high as I can with the push of the air | burst out of my hands, and when my foot touches the tip of the shovel's handle, I use it to fly higher. Ilya shoots again, the shadow person grabs the shovel and tosses it away, yowling. I plunge on the ground with all my strength and my blast pushes them far from me, Ilya's weapon firing anywhere towards the sky as he flies and lands on his back. The shadow thing growls, muttering guttural words in a language I don't know.
My smirk fades away when a projectile hits my arm, burning like I've been marked with incandescent iron.
Blood wets my fingers, Lara giggles.
"I've been looking for this moment for so long, pretty boy," Boy?
She aims her weapon again at me and I run fast, but llya catches me and punches me on my face. I see stars and spit blood. My teeth are all there, "Fuck you!" I vomit those words as he tries to slap me but I parry his arm, grab it, turn and make him roll over me.

"Are you okay?" Malostyi asks me.
I shrug.
"It is time, my dear," he says.
I look up, confused.
"Your first case," he says. "Let's put your skills to the test."
My skills aren't of much help now that my heart is so loud I bet everyone hears it.
Ilya and Lara glance my way, and I direct my gaze to Mal, rejoicing for their jealousy. "When?"
There's no need for him to clarify. His dimples speak plenty.
"Now?" My chest feels like a press on my heart, weighed down by the question of how I can go outside after all this time I've lived in this building. If I can't stay alive here, how will I make it outside?
"I need your help on this case," Mal says.
I nod, and he lends me his hand, which I grab and stand up.
"We'll walk there," he says to my ear. "Not a word to the others about this."
"Why?" My voice is sour. I don't like this. Secrets are hard to keep in this tiny group of one mysterious man, a master of arms, and four once-dead people who love to beat each other's asses.
Well, two beat each other and enjoy it. I survive. Ophelia mostly hides behind the pillars or finds brilliant ways to keep herself busy with papers, cleaning, and researching.
I guess we all kept things from our pasts inside, carved on our bones. We escaped death. Who knows if we escaped ourselves?
