A bead of sweat trails down my forehead as I walk towards the door. What in the world could be so urgent at four pm on a Monday? I have half a mind to chew out whoever’s on the other side of that door. Probably more missionaries trying to convince me to join their church or some salesman peddling insurance I have no need for.

I throw the door open with a bag, my protest already on my lips. “No, I have no interest in accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and– Kira?”
The sight of her makes me freeze. She looks so put together that I’m suddenly embarrassed to be greeting her in sweats and a tank top. Her blonde waves are pulled up in a well-styled bun, held together by a carefully positioned clip. I have the irrational urge to get rid of that stupid clip and wrap her hair around my fist instead. God, what the hell is it about this girl? Okay, it definitely doesn’t hurt that her short pumps and navy pencil skirt are making her legs look fantastic, but I completely forget how to function around her.

She offers me a hesitant smile. “I was considering converting to Satanism myself.”

“And you need me to do what? Be a willing sacrifice?”

Kira’s blue eyes roam my body as I invite her into the apartment. “That wouldn’t work, they usually want virgins.”

Text: Corado is just trying to survive the night—every night. Being a nightrunner, one of the few brave or foolish enough to defy humanity's vampire masters to traffic himself and others across barony lines, doesn't make it any easier though. With vampire posses stalking the desert during the day and their ravenous Horde filling the sky each night, it's a miracle he's survived as long as he has. Some of it he chalks up to skill, some to instinct, but he knows that when the dawn comes, the main thing seeing him through the night is good old-fashioned luck.

Nothing lasts forever though, and Corado's lucky streak soon comes to a quick and bloody end. After nighttime attack from the Horde leaves him stranded in the desert with a newly-orphaned boy named Hectar, he finds keeping the rest of the world at bay may not be as easy as he thought. Newfound companion in tow, he sets out to find what remains of the boy's family and finally put the whole thing behind him.

But as he knows by now, no job is ever so simple. As he tries to escort Hectar to safety, whispers of rebellion start drifting on the wind. With a world free of the Horde beginning to look like a real possibility, Corado must face vampires, twisted monstrosities, and the darkness lurking in men's hearts before he decides whether the world he's cut himself out of is one worth fighting for after all.
