But, needless to say, that is not a university: that’s a taxpayer-subsidized engine for private capital accumulation that retains the external form of a university —a beloved brand, taken over by private equity, that’s now different & worse, but keeps the old name—which is of course the whole point.

Students are using artificial intelligence for everything, including cheating, and a recent M.I.T. report said the technology was creating

A screenshot of a summary of the UUP's new contract. The summary reads, "Artificial Intelligence. New Contract Article on Artificial Intelligence. Establishes a groundbreaking new Article 44 on Artificial Intelligence. UUP is among the first bargaining units in the country to establish grievable AI protections in contract language. The article contains the following two provisions: • The ultimate accountability for work completed and actions made by, or in conjunction with, AI systems must rest with human beings. • Courses shall be o^ered under the direction and responsibility of the assigned human instructor of record or other human instructional personnel, consistent with applicable law, accreditation requirements, academic policy, and this Agreement.

Pedagogy is not some new, unsolved problem awaiting its Silicon Valley disruptor. If you want good teaching in any given subject, it’s there to be had. If you just don’t want to pay for it, then all we’re really talking about is how much you want something for nothing. That’s nothing new, either.

The idea that classrooms are chiefly spaces for product testing, and that it is irresponsible pedagogy not to enforce this, is both cynical and vile, and “fuck off” is a cogent response from any professional educator to any non-teaching salescreep or tech-but-not-subject-matter expert who voices it.
