Leonard Jason: Good news: I just learned of this NIH award to my research team: "SARS-CoV-2 and EBV-orchestrated activation of the kynurenine pathway" Sponsor: National Institutes of Health

Abstract: We propose to work on a single, focused goal that will require a team-based integration of distinct disciplines and know-how to deliver a transformative outcome. We propose to test the hypothesis that pathogenic induction of the Kynurenine pathway (KP) is a key foundation for the progression of COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) to Long COVID (LC) and infectious mononucleosis (IM) to Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). Our goal is to identify the shared pathophysiologic mechanisms that predispose a subset of individuals exposed to SARS-CoV-2 and primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infections to these Post-Acute Infectious Fatigue Syndromes.

A really good thread on a disorder that most people (including doctors) don’t know anything about. It’s worth educating yourself because it’s not at all uncommon in long COVID. Someone you know probably has it.

How (not) to Write about Health Equity-- an excellent satirical article published in @plosglobalpublichealth.org 🧪 An encapsulation of the feel-good, do-nothing approach to health equity; the lived experience paragraphs resonated most. Read the whole article here: journals.plos.org/globalpublic...
Praise “intersectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration” as the panacea. Everyone can collaborate: ministries, health professionals, researchers, civil society, philanthropic foundations, and commercial actors whose business models actively harm public health. Do not discuss conflicts of interest. Do not ask who has power in the room. Oppression disappears once everyone is brought to the table – provided no one asks who owns it, who paid for it, or who keeps poisoning the food.

Once the table is set, invite “lived experience” into the conversation. Invite structurally marginalised people to share their stories. Thank them for their courage. But do not let them decide what should change. Lived experience should move the room, not move resources or authority.

Just keep sweeping the bodies under the rug. No one will stop you. They’re too sick to make a fuss, & if they try you can always cry “harassment!” They’re obnoxiously needy & extremely inconvenient for their doctors, partners, families, friends… so who is gonna bother standing up for them? No one!

But why would scientists do such a thing? Bc you can make a lush little career for yourself telling govts & insurers what they want to hear. “That sick group of people over there who need billions of $$ in research funding, disability payments, & medical care? They don’t actually need ANY of that!”

Run a fraudulent trial to promote harmful snake oil over valid treatments for a disabling disease. Accuse patients who question you of harassment to avoid handing over the raw data that will expose you. Get the media to cover the story as “patients are harassing scientists!” #GreatestMEdicalScandal

I think it’s a big problem that most of the public is totally unfamiliar w/one of the worst yet common outcomes from Covid, namely ME/CFS. I often share this Sundance doc bc I think being able to visualize the harm (as we can for, say, polio) makes it easier to understand the desire to mitigate it.

An artist's impression of a Pakicetus, an early ancestor of the whale. It looks like a dog, with a long snout.

Just one small example of a chain of events that many women will recognize, whether it’s CSA leading to abuse in adulthood, or holding rapists accountable leading to DARVO, or the subtler forms of social ostracization, career & financial penalties, etc. imposed on women whether or not they speak up

In so many ways we’ve gone backwards… masks extremely stigmatized & sometimes outright banned, anti-vax sentiment up, 19th century pathogens thriving, public health defunded & derided, Medicaid defunded, hospitals/schools/airports more likely to disable or kill you, & ableism worse than ever

Maybe no one is more hated than women who resist rape. I’ve come to believe that women who have been, as I was, “public survivors” have a responsibility not to flinch in these face of this hate. I have a lot of rage about that time, but I don’t have any shame.
