Capitulation to the current regime is cowardice. The Smithsonian Institution is the most egregious cowardice of all, as it has literally embodied our national history. Not so much anymore. I'm in tears.

One footnote for today- A poll said that 80% of Americans did not agree with streaming of the public execution that Hegseth had planned. And today, Donald Trump, well-known paragon of civility, called off the streaming. So now, there's one tiny little place in my heart that is at rest.

Trump's worst work has been to pollute the public w/ violence, cruelty, racism, unwarranted suspicion about the reliability of elections & the courts. Disregard for the Constitution & for the law. He has torn our fabric & fractured our foundations. His work goes much deeper than some "bad policies".

Let's step back and run a Both Sides on world war II. Where would the world be now if Germany had won? Or-- where would the US be now, if Trump had proceeded with his plans unopposed by Democrats and the courts? Unopposed on Jan 6 by our courageous Capitol Police? Even by Mike Pence?

Piet Mondrian "Farm in Duivendrecht" (1907) oil on canvas | 86.3 × 107.9 cm (34 × 42.5 in). Art Institute of Chicago #ArtSky #Mondrian
"Farm Near Duivendrecht" (also known as Farm Near Duivendrecht, in the Evening), an oil painting completed around 1916 by the famous Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.

Context & Style

While Mondrian is globally celebrated for his later grid-based abstract art featuring primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and black lines, this work represents a crucial transitional phase in his career.
The Subject: Mondrian first sketched this particular thatched-roof farmhouse near Amsterdam around 1905. He returned to the composition a decade later during World War I.
The Transition to Abstraction: This piece highlights his growing obsession with structure. While it remains a recognizable landscape, the geometric simplification of the farmhouse and the intricate, flat web-like patterns of the bare tree branches strongly hint at his evolution toward total geometric abstraction.

DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY
8 CFR Part 214
[CIS No. 2870-26; DHS Docket No. USCIS-2026-0529]
RIN 1615-AD26
Removing Deference to Prior USCIS Determinations of Eligibility
AGENCY: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, DHS.
ACTION: Notice of proposed rulemaking.
SUMMARY: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS), proposes to remove 8 CFR 214.1(c)(5), which generally
provides that USCIS gives deference to a prior approval involving the same facts when
adjudicating a request to extend a petition for an alien’s employment or stay. This change
would better align DHS regulations with the statute, which places the burden of proving
eligibility for all immigration benefits on the petitioner, applicant, or beneficiary;
strengthen adjudicatory review; and support agency priorities to improve the integrity of
the immigration system and better protect the interests of U.S. workers.

Former “free speech” crusaders have ushered in an unprecedented campaign of censorship in Texas universities, resulting in pulitzer winning books being banned, medical and scientific facts being suppressed, and entire fields of study deemed “woke” being eliminated www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Over the past decade, some conservatives have invoked principles of academic freedom and free speech in order to subvert both. These conservatives mocked “snowflakes” and “trigger warnings,” and then passed legislation making it illegal to hurt white students’ feelings by discussing historical or contemporary events. They invoked academic freedom and then began erasing fields of study they found politically inconvenient. They railed against “indoctrination,” and then argued that the state is entitled to control everything said in the classroom.
