Salvador Dalí "Family of Marsupial Centaurs" (1940) oil on canvas | 35.6 x 31 cm (14 x 12.2 in). Private Collection #ArtSky #Dalí
"Family of Marsupial Centaurs" (1940) by the Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí.

Key Details

• Medium: Oil on canvas.
• Style: Classical-leaning surrealism.
• Inspiration: Dalí linked the work to psychoanalyst Otto Rank’s theories on birth trauma, reflecting his own lifelong fascination with pre-birth memories.

Art Historical Context

During this time, Dalí moved away from the chaotic and pure automatism of early Surrealism toward what he described as a return to a Classical style. In this painting, he merges traditional mythological motifs (the centaur) with Renaissance-like anatomical precision, dynamic motion, and balanced composition.

Meaning and Psychoanalytic Influence

Dalí dedicated this piece to Dr. Otto Rank, a prominent psychoanalyst who theorized that human neurosis originates from birth trauma. Dalí claimed to possess vivid "intrauterine memories"—recollections of his time inside the womb before being born.
The Marsupial Metaphor: To visually represent this concept, Dalí transformed the centaurs into "marsupials" by painting hollow, womb-like openings directly into their torsos and bodies.
The Imagery: Inside these protective cavities, you can see human infants being sheltered and emerging, symbolizing the safety of the womb and the dramatic transition of birth.

Wassily Kandinsky "Composition VII" (1913) oil on canvas | 78.7 × 118.1 in. (200.0 × 300.0 cm) State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow #ArtSky #Kandinsky

Key Facts About the Painting

• Artist: Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944)
• Year: Created in November 1913 in Munich
• Medium & Dimensions: Oil on canvas; 78.7 × 118.1 inches (200.0 × 300.0 cm)
• Current Location: The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia

Composition & Meaning

• Meticulous Chaos: While the piece appears entirely spontaneous and explosive, Kandinsky spent months creating over 30 preliminary drawings, watercolors, and oil sketches to meticulously map out its layers. He then executed the final, massive canvas in just four days.
• Visual Music: Deeply fascinated by the relationship between art and music, Kandinsky used the term "Composition" to describe works that expressed a deeply matured, internal spiritual feeling. He designed the interactions of colors and geometric elements to behave like standard orchestral or symphonic scores to invoke specific inner sensations.
• Hidden Motifs: Though it represents an intentional departure from traditional representation, art historians recognize undercurrents of biblical themes within its swirling patterns, including the Flood, Resurrection, Judgment Day, and the Garden of Eden

Salvador Dalí "Tristan and Isolde" (1944) Painted canvas 'curtain' | 8 x 15 meters (30 x 50 feet) Private Collection (Switzerland) #ArtSky #Dalí
This rare Salvador Dali work recently unveiled in Montreal measures 8 metres by 15 metres. The piece was created in New York in the 1940s for a Metropolitan Opera ballet based on the tale of Tristan and Isolde. According to CBC Radio-Canada, the work disappeared from public view following the close of that production in 1949. A related release stated it was restored in Switzerland in 2009.

Recently, an anonymous European collector offered the work to Daniele Finzi Pasca, a Swiss director and choreographer who has worked on productions for Cirque du Soleil and Cirque Éloize, as well as the closing ceremonies of the Turin Olympics.

Key Details

• Artist: Salvador Dalí
• Year: 1944
• Medium: Painted canvas
• Original Purpose: Created as a massive stage backdrop for the ballet Mad Tristan at New York's Metropolitan Opera.

Distinctive Features

• The Figures: One figure features a head made of a fluffy dandelion, while the other has a wheelbarrow sprouting from its back like wings.
• The Landscape: The dreamlike, barren setting includes Dalí's signature red crutches standing in the sand.

The Backdrop's Journey

• Rediscovery (2009): After touring the world through the 1940s and 1950s, the massive 30-by-50-foot canvas spent decades forgotten. It was finally rediscovered in 2009 inside the prop storage archives of New York's Metropolitan Opera.

2 studies exist:
• The 1938 oil study is located at The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.
• The 1944 oil on canvas project study is located at the Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí in Figueres, Spain

Vincent van Gogh "Three Sunflowers in a Vase" (August 1888) Arles oil on canvas | 73 x 58 cm (28.7 x 22.8 in)* *(Note: Van Gogh painted this on a "size 20 figure" canvas format) Private Collection "shrouded in mystery" #ArtSky #VanGogh
Three Sunflowers in a Vase (also known as Vase with Three Sunflowers), painted by the legendary Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh in August 1888.
This piece belongs to his famous Sunflowers series, which he created while living in Arles, France, to decorate the room of his fellow artist and friend Paul Gauguin. Unlike the more commonly recognized variations that feature twelve or fifteen flowers, this earlier version portrays exactly three vibrant blooms resting in a prominent green ceramic vessel against a stark light turquoise-blue backdrop.
