#106 #archaeology #historicpreservation #trumparch 🏺This morning ACHP terminated S106 for the Arch in DC. This was accompanied by a lengthy summary of the findings of the adverse effects. I'll try to post, as well as get my hands on and share the actual letter.
From: Reid Nelson <rnelson@achp.gov>
Date: Thu, Sep 24, 2026 at 9:51 AM
Subject: ACHP Termination of Section 106 Consultation on Triumphal Arch Project, Washington, DC and Virginia
To: councilmembers2026 <councilmembers2026@achp.gov>
ACHP Members,
Moments ago, Vice Chairman Voyles terminated Section 106 consultation pursuant to 36 CFR § 800.7(a)(1) for the Triumphal Arch Project in Washington, DC and Virginia. The rationale for his decision can be found in the attached correspondence. Pursuant to Section 800.7(c) of the regulations the ACHP is obligated to provide its comment within 45 days, however, Vice Chairman Voyles has stated his intent to do so by October 7, 2026. Outlined below is a brief summary of the undertaking and relevant issues.

In accordance with the ACHP’s Operating Procedures at Section V.B.2.c.ii and to meet this abbreviated comment period, Vice Chairman Voyles has chosen to address this termination through the development of a Vice Chairman comment letter. Consistent with those procedures, a draft of the letter will be shared with the members for their review and input prior to being finalized. We intend to circulate a draft letter to the members for their review on Monday, October 5, with comments requested by noon ET on Tuesday, October 6.

In the meantime, should members have any questions regarding this project and next steps, please contact me or Jaime Loichinger, OFAP Director, copied here.

#ReliefWednesday - The Ludovisi Battle sarcophagus or "Great" Ludovisi sarcophagus is an ancient Roman sarcophagus dating to around AD 250–260. Found in 1621 in the Vigna Bernusconi, a tomb near the Porta Tiburtina. (See Alt. ) #History #Art 👀
It is known for its densely populated, anti-classical composition of "writhing and highly
emotive"Romans and Goths, and is an example of the battle scenes favored in Roman art during the Crisis of the Third Century. Discovered in 1621 and named for its first modern owner, Ludovico Ludovisi, the sarcophagus is now displayed at the Palazzo Altemps in Rome, part of the National Museum of Rome as of 1901.
