Gran Telescopio Canarias image of Arp 288, also known as NGC 5221. In 2016, a supernova appeared in the galaxy's long tidal tail to the right, about 260 thousand light years from the galactic center. Credit: GTC, IAC Source
A disrupted spiral galaxy. The disk of the galaxy is tilted, so that it appears as an oval shape, rather than a circle. The galaxy has a bright yellow center and a dark ring of dust that circles the galaxy about half way out of the disk. Above and below the plane of the disk, the galaxy has some pretty intense tidal tails, blue streams of gas and stars that appear to be flowing off of the main galaxy. The ones below the disk form a rough V shape and the ones above fan out like smoke rising from a campfire. Dotted against the black background of space are many small background galaxies and foreground stars.

This is a photograph of the edge of one of Saturn's rings, looking down from above. Those spiky dark shapes are shadows. Shadows of giant towers of ice and dust grains clumped together that rise up to three *kilometres* above the 10-m thick rings.
A series of bands cross the image from left to right, brighter at the bottom and darkening towards the top. A band of empty space is at the top of the image. About a quarter down from the top is a complex pattern of jagged, spiky shadows cast onto the rings. The icy towers casting the shadows are seen here at a highly oblique angle.

The yellow core of a disrupted spiral galaxy is surrounded by irregular, translucent spiral arms. The inner part of the galaxy is seen at an angle, so that it appears oval-shaped rather than circular. Dark brown dust lanes and pink star forming regions cross a yellow haze of older stars. The faint blue arms unfurl from the center, like paint flung out of a spinning canvas. They are dotted with blue star clusters. The arms stretch out to the right of the frame. The black background of space is filled with foreground stars and tiny background galaxies.

AM 1229-512 - From Judy Schmidt (geckzilla.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/2f7WRGY
A super faint edge-on disk galaxy, and somewhat of an enigma. How it formed like this and how its frontal morphology might appear are subject to speculation, but chances are if we saw it from a sufficiently inclined vantage point, it would be practically invisible beyond its nucleus, assuming what we see is spread out fairly evenly along the disk and not concentrated along some very skinny arms.

Anyway, I'm happy to simply enjoy yet another wonderful variation that nature has given us.

Hello everyone, here is your daily update on what the Sun is doing: (Paraphrased from NOAA SWPC's recent forecast discussion) Low activity: C2.5 and C1.1 flares from the NW limb, and Region 4535 decayed. A partial halo CME may give Earth a glancing blow on Oct 2.
Two images of the Sun side by side from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, Tuesday, September 29. Left, the Sun in visible light with 1 labeled sunspot region. Right, the Sun in extreme ultraviolet with coronal holes outlined and numbered. Across the top: sunspot number 16, solar flux 95 solar flux units, flare probability C 40%, M 10%, X 1%. At right, NOAA's 3-day Kp forecast as bars colored by level, peaking at Kp 2.00 for 00-03 UT on September 29.
