Yeah, it definitely did get weirdly boring towards the end. I've been spoiled by Tchaikovsky's depictions of alien cognition, I suppose. My main objections are more about how rough&uneven the writing is, though. Feels like an unedited draft (a pitfall of serial novels).

There is (and probably always has been) a massive cultural appetite for opportunities to mock people for being non-normative. In part it allows the ingroup to draw boundaries around itself, both outwards and inwards—a warning of what transgression brings, and an assertion of hierarchy.
