With an ongoing marine heatwave, you may encounter marine animals that are sick, injured, or deceased. The best way to help is to keep a safe distance and call the experts trained to respond. Visit pacific.to/rescue for the full list of SoCal rescue contacts.

Pastis is a national treasure. And correctly identifies causes.
Pearls Before Swine comic strip.

Panel 1: Goat and Rat are standing behind a brick wall, while Goat reads the newspaper. Goat starts: “Look at these crazy stats”.
Panel 2: “Dining out for a family of four now costs 40% more than five years ago.”
Panel 3: “Healthcare is now 25% more expensive than five years ago.”
Panel 4: “The price of a gallon of gas is now 43% higher than it was five years ago.”
Panel 5: “And property insurance now costs 46% more than it did five years ago.”
Panel 6: Rat injects “Oh whine whine whine… So we’re all taking a bit of a hit financially. At least we’re all in the same boat.”
Panel 7: Goat shows Rat the newspaper. The newspaper reads: “Over the last five years, the top 1% of American households saw their collective wealth grow by fourteen trillion dollars.”
Panel 8: Rat suddenly is wearing a Rambo headband and toting a torch and pitchfork. He says “If you need me, I’ll be fomenting revolution.”

It would be a huge help if anyone affiliated with a university would put in a request for the library to purchase a copy if they don’t have one already. If your request is denied, we’ve found that asking your colleagues to put in additional requests works a lot of the time.

“I am the People, the Mob” by Carl Sandburg has me in its grip today on Labor Day.
When I, the People, learn to remember, when I, the People, use the lessons of yesterday and no longer forget who robbed me last year, who played me for a fool—then there will be no speaker in all the world say the name: “The People,” with any fleck of a sneer in his voice or any far-off smile of derision.
The mob—the crowd—the mass—will arrive then.

Product safety is not always like the movies. Here, we have resources.
A realistic coyote sitting in a cave on a gaming chair at a laptop as the sun sets outside. They are wearing reading glasses and looking at SaferProducts.gov. The text reads: In the real world, the coyote checks and reports unsafe products on SaferProducts.gov. A sign next to the coyote says, "Air fryer trash! Started smoking without roadrunner!" There is an air fryer in the corner on fire labeled, "Roadrunner air fryer X.L." In the background, outside the cave, a roadrunner says, "Beep! Beep!" and leaves a big trail of dust. Other text reads: Check for injuries before you buy or sell a product, and report unsafe products to CPSC!
