I find it hard to describe what the Marvel movies actually ARE, which I think is interesting. flaminghydra.com/issue-623/

With a couple exceptions I have dutifully schlepped out to the movie theaters to see every single MCU movie since the first Iron Man, when I covered the premiere for Daily Variety.
Even when everyone else has hated them I have at least seen something I sort of liked about them. Despite their rewatchability, the MCU movies feel less like actual movies than like parts of a larger project of dubious value, but of tremendous interest. They almost always have at least one brilliant performance in them, usually by the actor playing the villain; Marvel Comics are filled with villains who have interesting motivations and costumes, and so you get Christian Bale in Thor: Love and Thunder and Harrison Ford in Captain America: Brave New World. And in the multi-movie roles, casting real actors to play characters who famously never age or die is a fascinating gamble. From the moment of Samuel L. Jackson's cameo at the end of Iron Man, the series has always looked forward, to the next installment, and despite some real-world disasters that changed the shape of the project-Disney's stupid, retaliatory firings of unionizing VFX workers;
Jonathan Majors's horrible cruelty to his partners; the death of Chadwick Boseman-the show has gone on.
