Some context regarding Moda Center renovations. The Trail Blazers $600 million request is larger than any recent/planned public contribution to an NBA/NHL arena renovation. It's not "market rate" or even reasonable. What Dundon is demanding is an outlier.

“Culture of impunity” is right. The demand is to never hold public figures accountable for wrongdoing, not even verbally when they’re already beyond the reach of human accountability and won’t hear the criticisms and jokes. The legacy must be sanitized, or current elites might feel less impunity.

Agreed about your point as well. Soccer is not on an island tho. Youth sports in general are structured this way. Fees are an investment towards a future scholarship. Most families don’t see this as a path towards pros. Hard to divorce the pay to play nature of higher ed from sports.

I also think the entity that has been left out of this conversation is the NCAA. Club and youth sports bends to preparing kids for a hopeful college scholarship. What we are talking about is using youth sports to prepare professionals. It’s a big shift.

the real doom loop is service cuts to our transit system. if you cut frequency on an already infrequent system, it’s going to hurt ridership, which will lead to more cuts and fare hikes, which further hurt ridership. all of that of course adds future liabilities to the rest of the transport system
