Having lived there as a kid in the 70s it’s so sad watching the acid of greed eat it alive. It’s like it’s been taken over by pod people. I feel blessed that I got to experience it back then. Oakland was always the heart of the Bay Area. The energy is still there for me 40 years later.

For authors who are outraged at Amazon's AI book scanning tool, here are some resources that I've put together (sorry, they might be out of order) #booksky #writersky #authors #authorcommunity #writingcommunity
Plain red background and white text with black outline that reads: While it seems that a lot of authors don't yet know about the roll-out of this new tool, make sure that you are spreading and sharing the news as much as possiblePlain red background and white text with black outline that reads: Consider reaching out to organizations such as the Author's Guild and The Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi), or even joining if you're ablePlain red background and white text with black outline that reads: I get it: contacting the Zon and KDP both seem futile, like there's no reason to try, and like you're not likely to get a response. But the more of us who contact them as much as possible, the better, even just so they know how many authors are outraged, how many authors they are losingPlain red background and white text with black outline that reads: Make sure you try the following options in order to voice your concerns:

One of the worse aspects of the tech is it’s subtle mission to take away agency from you. Want me to do the PRs? Want to automatically run those scripts? It’s seductive on a very toxic way.

When you say warnings, please be more specific. Are you talking about warnings from AI insiders in order to lock in their power, or are you talking about the warnings from environmentalists and ordinary people about how the technology is fundamentally dangerous to the environment?

The biggest thing, to me, is that @rude1.blacksky.team is building what I believe is what social media should’ve always been from the start. BlueSky gets credit for getting AT Protocol off the ground, but BlackSky is really delivering the vision, IMO. I believe in what they’re doing.

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

"It is meaningless that we live and it is meaningless that we die," Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant)

“Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance.” Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea (La Nausée)

I don’t remember whose insight this is, but it blew my mind when I first read that to understand American history you have to get that race law was designed to increase the number of enslavable people (one-drop rule) and decrease the number of claimants to indigenous land (blood quantum)
Jamelle Bouie writes: yeah this is a separate conversation but one of the things that hasn’t quite bubbled up from scholarship into mainstream thinking is that american slavery was a system centered principally on reproduction. forced birth for capital accumulation is what it was
