And my own very extensive family genealogy dating from the 19th century was written by a Confederate sympathiser who spent a year imprisoned for disloyalty and has a Daughters of the Confederacy chapter named after him. Can't choose your relatives, unfortunately.

I may be related to this person; I went and looked her up, since Bright is a family surname, and I see her father was from Pennsylvania. Dead-ends there on Familysearch but there's a good chance the surname was originally "Brecht" and this may be George's ancestor: www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brecht-61

From 4 different states, but; all of my grandparents had colonial Maryland ancestry. And my direct paternal 4GGM's younger sister moved to and died in the same town in GA that my grandmother moved back to from DC with my father and aunts after she divorced my grandfather in the late 1950's.

(2/2) this varies by state; most states didn't see full compliance until the early 1930s or so. The most interesting info I obtained from those was discovering that the physician who delivered my paternal grandfather was a 4th cousin several times removed on my mother's side.

Yes; 1923-1927, one from Kentucky, one from DC, one from Georgia, one from Mississippi. My paternal grandfather's birth certificate from DC is amended; there was no name initially, just "infant", but there is a note attached dated some years later with his given names. (1/2)

Rumour is that his dick broke thanks to a faulty penile implant and that's why all his kids are IVF. How true that may, one can't say, but it's highly probable that he's never had sexual intercourse with the mothers of most of his children.

My 4th g-grandfather's uncle and brother were members of the Maryland House of Delegates, his 1C1R & great-nephew were both elected US Senator and governor; he went bankrupt in the 1830s, and my 3rd great-grandfather was a wallpaper hanger and policeman.

Also it is hard for many people to overcome a belief system into which they were indoctrinated from a very young age. Especially if they belong to an insular community sharing those beliefs and constantly reinforcing them.

The fact that both Democrats and Republicans are racing to the 10 side of a 90-10 issue really tells you a lot about the state of our democracy (it's a corporatocracy), and how both parties view democracy in general (as a nuisance).

it's as simple as i see no evidence that national dems intend to resist, let alone stop, fascism, and i want to convice folks to stop relying on them to do so. because fascism must be stopped and they are in the way. that's it. that's my whole entire thing.

ICYMI: Le Guin's assessment of the Harry Potter books, from an interview in The Guardian (09 Feb 2004). www.theguardian.com/books/2004/f...
Q: Nicholas Lezard has written 'Rowling can type, but Le Guin can write.' What do you make of this comment in the light of the phenomenal success of the Potter books? I'd like to hear your opinion of JK Rowling's writing style

UKL: I have no great opinion of it. When so many adult critics were carrying on about the "incredible originality" of the first Harry Potter book, I read it to find out what the fuss was about, and remained somewhat puzzled; it seemed a lively kid's fantasy crossed with a "school novel", good fare for its age group, but stylistically ordinary, imaginatively derivative, and ethically rather mean-spirited.

Yep, my own German immigrant ancestors were varied, from the Rhineland Palatinate, Baden-Württemberg, and *possibly* what was then Bohemia (no idea on that line before arrival in Baltimore in the 1750's, but they were United Brethren, which has roots in the Hussite movement).

VG @electrocutionist.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Also, there was a lot of colonial-era German immigration, but most came after 1848, which means there was an existing German-American culture to integrate into; Irish Catholic, not so much.
