Second, mechanically, here is what I think happened. Schmitt got hold of Smith staff texts that reference a game, and were confused about some mention of the Hawks/Hawkeyes. (Schmitt would say the Hawks game was the only NCAA/NBA game that day, but thats not true - there were five other NBA games).
Schmitt’s staff were looking for a gotcha they could use against Smith. They accessed Wallach’s texts, possibly via friendly sources at the FBI or Department of Justice. (They did not explain their sourcing). They found a string of texts about a basketball game featuring the Hawks/Hawkeyes. They thought “the Hawks - wait, they play in Atlanta - which is where Fani Willis lives.” Ladies and gentleman, we got him.

If you've been online, you saw the basics, but I was still super puzzled by what Schmitt thought he had. So a couple of important things. First, the damning poster. What is going on with that?
The important think to understand is that it features two very different set of actors that Schmitt tries, and fails, to connect. Group 1: Fani Willis was a Georgia (Fulton County) District Attorney who was discovered to have had a romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, whom she appointed as special prosecutor to investigate Trump. Or more simply, a hated Trump enemy. Group 2: J.P. Cooney is a staffer who worked for Smith, and Gavin Wallach appears to be a US Marshall, who plausibly worked security for Smith. We were offered no evidence that they are connected with Willis beyond their co-existence on the poster.

New from me: I unpack what happened at the Jack Smith hearing, and offer a theory of what the hell Senator Eric Schmitt thought he was doing. And yes, an inability to tell the difference between the Hawks and Hawkeyes really did seem to be a big part of it. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/what-happe...

But Schmitt clearly did not have *any additional evidence that Willis met with Smith* (separate issue as to why this would have been a big deal). Like this guy was Attorney General for Missouri and his whole case was Smith went to a basketball game in a city where another Trump enemy lived? WTF?

You put your money in a savings account & get paid on average 0.37% interest, according to FDIC data. The bank can then put your cash at the Fed & get paid 4% interest. Bank lobbyists have blocked the bill to let you cut out the middle man & put your cash at the Fed. This is called "capitalism."
