Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

So while people are talking about potash, I've just experienced another episode of Eleanor's Dawning Realizations About English: I did not recognize "potash" as a compound and thought it was pronounced like some combination of "potage" and "succotash."

Wow, one minute I'm reading a column about how people love to talk about "lore" now, and the next minute I've moved on to the next tab and stumbled upon the phrase "an enduring piece of niche Paxton lore."

AI writing is going to be an unfathomably huge issue for SFF short fiction markets. People aren’t even good at it yet, and it’s a problem. As the models get better and the prompters develop more skills, it will be so critical for organizing bodies to protect magazines.

Next came a huge rolling loon puppet. The wings moved. I've included photos from the front and back because I think the puppetry here is part of what's interesting; the guy riding on the back controlled the wires for the wings. It's also a loon in the "loon rampant" pose.

Thank you to @authorsabb.bsky.social heroes @beccacoffindaffer.bsky.social and Ed Underhill, we have some slides that can be shared by anyone about this, with particular reps to target. Let's kill this bill in committee.
Tell Your Rep: Vote No ON HR 7661House Republicans have introduced a bill to effectively grant the federal government decision making power over what books make it to the library.

Misleadingly called the "stop the sexualization of children act" HR 7661 is a national level book banning bill that would ban any book that, according to the bill's language "involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism"

This means any book about a trans peson or the trans experience would be banned from every public school in the USThe bill has been referred to the House Committee on education and workforce. If you're represented by one of the members of this committee listed below they need to hear from you:

Kevin Kiley, CA
Mary E Miller, IL
Glenn Thompson, PA
Burgess Owerns, UT
Michael Rulli, OH
James Moylan, Guam
Ryan Mackenzie< PA
Mark Harris, NC
Mark Messmer, IN
Suzanne Bonamici, OR
Jahana Hayes, CT
Summer Lee, PA
John Mannion, NY
Federica Wilson, FL
Alma Adams, NC
Adelita Grijalva, AZCALL YOUR REPS

THem they must oppose this bill at every turn.
It's egregiously unconsiutional, targets based on ideological disapproval, and misleads parents and the public about the content of children's books.
It does nothing to protect kids and will badly harm education.
It will tie school material funding into knots and hurt anyone who is alibrary materials vendor regardless of content
If you're a publishing pro, tell them your livelihood depends on the next generation of readers.
