Whoa, this brought back a memory! I heard a version of this song at a Girl Scout camp in the 90s. The words were a bit different but I'm pretty sure it's the same song.

Having seen the Joyce Carol Oates very bad, not good tweet about romance and AI, I can't help thinking about the way that romance has been treated as a punching bag for so long and always by people who are completely unwilling to engage with the genre and know little about it.

Yes, I think so! I think it'd work in your sentence. People might interpret it as a metaphorical extension of, like, the overture to an opera, but I think the intended meaning would still get through? Haha, yes, I get that sense from my own phrase too.

Oh, hm, my first reaction was that I agree that's probably obsolete; I think I only have the musical sense and the "making overtures" sense. But also when you mentioned war, I was like, "the overtures of war, that sounds pretty good" (but apparently I wanted it in the plural?).

Jennifer Nelson’s entry to this year’s Minnesota State Fair crop art
A localized version of Guernica with a loon at the center and a person holding an ICE OUT sign

“My piece was inspired by Picasso's Guernica, a work that was his response to the Nazi's bombing of the Basque town. I thought there was a fitting parallel between these incidents about the high price paid by ordinary people when aggressive regimes try out new tactics of war, as well as a fitting juxtaposition of the darkness of living such an experience and the light we shone through it in our own resistance and care for one another. The patterns near Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s mouths are actually their last words in Morse code: ‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’”

So while people are talking about potash, I've just experienced another episode of Eleanor's Dawning Realizations About English: I did not recognize "potash" as a compound and thought it was pronounced like some combination of "potage" and "succotash."

Wow, one minute I'm reading a column about how people love to talk about "lore" now, and the next minute I've moved on to the next tab and stumbled upon the phrase "an enduring piece of niche Paxton lore."

AI writing is going to be an unfathomably huge issue for SFF short fiction markets. People aren’t even good at it yet, and it’s a problem. As the models get better and the prompters develop more skills, it will be so critical for organizing bodies to protect magazines.

I tried downloading a PDF from that page too (not sure if it was the same button), but I just got a 300+ page catalog listing thing... I'm inclined to think there isn't actually a downloadable PDF of the zine, unfortunately.

I'm less than halfway through this library book, and so far I have already encountered TWO instances of a previous reader correcting, in pen, "laid" to "lay." They are correct, but...it's a library book.
