Okay you know what, I suddenly love sharing an office with engineers. They're planning something for our Halloween decorating contest that involves motors, forty feet of wall space, and annexing my cubicle when they already had twenty cubes to start with. Ganbatte y'all. Can't wait to see.

Highlight of my visit to the Deichman in Oslo last month. Emily Rodda was my first favorite author. The Deltora Quest series were the books that got me reading. That post-apocalyptic fantasy world, with its monstrous guardians, will never leave me.
Three slim paperbacks with gold covers being held, fanned out, by a teenager whose face is off camera. Only the first cover is really visible. It says, "Deltoras Belte," the title, at the bottom, and Emily Rodda across the top. The cover art is like a painting within the gold frame. It shows a blood-red, oval ruby floating above a massive, sharp-toothed fish that's rising out of the water. The near shore, in the foreground, is covered in worms and mutated reptiles.

The tl;dr for my thoughts on The Speed of Dark, the Nebula-winning novel about a guy getting his autism cured: Neurotypical people are allowed to squander their “true potential” without dangling what-if scenarios where it’d be awesome if they got bodysnatched by a superior version of themselves.

Me: I wonder who the charming fella I just rescued from my shower and gently tucked into the laundry pile to dry off is? Me: "illinois light brown tan house spider plain back round butt really long front legs" Me: oh. um. it didn't look like the Common House Spider. uh.
A ID chart of fifteen common Illinois spiders. There are two categories: "less venomous" and "highly venomous." The spider that matches the description is the brown recluse. The author really hopes that this chart is AI slop and lies.

The cover for Uncanny Magazine Issue 62, “Mermay - Golden Hour" by Maxine Vee: In a forest of brown, orange, and golden leaves, a mermaid with orange/gold hair sits on a rock in a small light blue pond. She stares at her open palms, illuminated by a beam of sunlight. Purple flowers in shade lie scattered on the ground in the foreground. The quote reads: "Hence, a watchseed, with the best of intentions. Let’s give the seed-planters that much. They mean well. Crawling from star to star at not-quite-c, they make their surveys, consult their charts, launch a seed now and then. Old thinkers, they make an endless circuit of the galaxy on behalf of young thinkers."

Mumbrella (six eggs!)
A photo of a goose nesting in a sidewalk garden bed, taken from the inside of an office building. It's raining. The goose has flattened herself over her nest and spread her wings out to protect it. She is glaring at the numpty taking her photo. Offscreen, other office numpties are proposing to install a beach umbrella for her. She has a history of biting humans performing unasked for favors. The pending beach umbrella incident will surely be no different. You should see my bruises.
