DVDs aren't low-tech. They're just things you can actually own, that won't disappear overnight, that don't require a monthly subscription, that won't suddenly get reedited, that won't start putting adverts in the middle and that won't sell your data to the worst people in the world.

My personal AI agent posted my bank details on company Slack. It's made me rethink how I use it.
Shane Mac, the CEO of XMTP Labs, got a rude shock when one of his AI agents posted his monthly bank audit in a company Slack channel.

you don’t hold "AI" accountable; you hold AI developers, vendors, and corporations that profit off it accountable holding "AI accountable" is like holding a toaster accountable. it's an inanimate object. it doesn't have wishes, feelings, or desires

There's a tremendous amount of tool wankery going on these days. So much so that it's worth recalling that while tool wankery can be fun and educational, and some tool wankery is necessary and useful, tool wankery by itself does not deliver value to anyone but the tool wanker.

Ha ha, nice! This is of course true for language at the macro level - words get their meaning by comparing and contrasting with other words! Certainly! I was thinking more narrowly, alluding to the tendency of Gen AI tools to use the phrase “it isn’t this - it’s that”.

Den tidligere digitaliseringsministeren er sikkert lykkelig over å se at KI også har inntatt domstolene, her ved at dommeren selv har glemt å ta ut prompten sin av domsteksten. Kan man stole på resten av denne dommen? Andre dommer? Ingen vet! Men er det så farlig? Det er jo bare rettsstaten 🥳

yup, and Joseph Weizenbaum articulated this playbook clearly back in 1972 "This is usually coupled to the more or less subtle assertion that only computer science, hence only the computer scientist, can guard the world against the admittedly hazardous fallout of applied computer technology."
a screenshot reads: The structure of the typical essay
on "The impact of computers on so-
ciety" is as follows: First there is an
"on the one hand" statement. It tells
all the good things oomputers have
already done for society and often even
attempts to argue that the social order
would already have collapsed were it
not for the "computer revolution."
This is usually followed by an "on the
other hand" caution which tells of cer-
tain problems the introduction of com-
puters brings in its wake. The threat
posed to individual privacy by large
data banks and the danger of large-
scale unemployment induced by indus-
trial automation are usually mentioned.
Finally, the glorious present and pro-
spective achievements of the computer
are applauded, while the *dangers al-
luded to in the second part are shown
to be capable of being alleviated by
sophisticated technological fixes. The
closing paragraph consists of a plea
for generous societal support for more,
and more large-scale, computer re-
search and development. This is
usually coupled to the more or less
subtle assertion that only computer
science, hence only the computer sci-
entist, can guard the world against the
admittedly hazardous fallout of applied
computer technology.
In fact, the computer has had very
considerably less societal impact than
the mass media would lead us to be-
lieve. Certainly, there are enterprises
like space travel that could not have
been undertaken without computers.
Certainly the computer industry, and
with it the computer education indus-
try, has grown to enormous propor-
tions. But much of the industry is
self-serving. It is rather like an island
economy in which the natives make a
living by talking in each other's laundry.
The part that is not self-serving is
