This is the dodgiest and most-desperate thing I’ve seen in the bubble so far. Amazon selling their chips to a group of investors and leasing them back - an off balance sheet arrangement done in plain sight. Really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. And they’ll probably buy more!
Amazon is seeking to offload about $8bn of advanced Nvidia chips to external investors through a new vehicle aimed at strengthening its balance sheet, according to people familiar with the matter.
The Seattle-based cloud giant has held talks with investors in recent weeks to gauge interest in the deal, which would allow the company to spin off thousands of Grace Blackwell chips it is deploying in data centres across the US into a special-purpose vehicle.
Amazon will then lease the advanced AI chips back from the SPV, which would tap outside investors through debt issuance. By unloading the expensive semiconductors to investors, the company could adopt a more asset-light approach to its balance sheet.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Dette her.

Saw DHHs keynote. Had to respond. TLDR; AI tools are great for individuals to make boring applications with a well known specification. If you're collaborating with others, and need (and care!) about feedback, it's less of a game changer piece-of-cake.no/direct/aidel...

Democracy, the end of slavery, women’s suffrage, equal rights, all wild and idealistic proposals met with “come on, get real, that’ll never fly with those in charge”. But it did fly. It made the world better. We need to stop being defeatists and just accept crap from those in charge. We have power!

It wasn't the craftspeople who ended up benefiting from the modern looms. When all the dust has settled and venture capital is no longer funding AI use - who will be in control? Who will benefit? Who will be exploited? I'm not impressed by devs today excited by their increased productivity from AI

I still have Claude, use it very little, but my son is still disappointed in me. Yesterday I tried to explain: But I used it to help me with scripting. I suck at scripting. Went on to show him the resulting script and 5 minutes in I'm like. You're right, this is garbage. I could have done better.

AI companies in the US and China are losing $ billions per quarter with no clear path to profitability. Europe isn't losing anywhere near as much! 😱 Embarrassing! Europe must get with the program, and start throwing more of our money on the AI dumpster fire as well! We can't be out spent by the US!

I think we could have AI agent swarms that could do serious harm to humanity in 6-12 months. Not because they have become sentient, or reached AGI, but because software already controls so much, and current agents can do tons of damage as they are now. We don't need AGI for this to become dangerous.

I just got in trouble (again) for making suggestions in good faith. "But don't you see, if you propose something, and people like the suggestion, they might put pressure on management to have it implemented" Well... yes? I can see that? Been mansplained this more than once! Fascinating.
