So, IBM publishes machine-generated translations of AIX documentation on its Web site, and the French translation of awk documentation translated “sin” and “log” (the math functions) as if they were the words for a religious transgression and a journal respectively. 🤣

A linguistic point about French vs English: I recently retrieved an item from an Amazon locker, and the locker thanked me, in French, with “merci d'utiliser Amazon locker”. I would argue this is a bad translation of “thank you for using Amazon locker”. Let me explain. 🧵⤵️ •1/17

Coxeter noticed that you can stick regular tetrahedra together to make a helix. It never repeats: no two tetrahedra have the same orientation in space! These simple discoveries are priceless. Click on the link to watch a short animation of it - it's fun! commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bo...

This is a cliff on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko. It's about 1 km tall. If you jumped from the top, it would take you 47 minutes to reach the bottom, and you'd probably be OK.
On the right of the image is a sheer cliff face marked with vertical striations; talus lies at its base. The left of the image is in almost total darkness, and the background is deep space.

Isn't this pretty? That's Windows Explorer, showing Git commit messages, the last changed date, and a version status of the file is modified and needs to be committed, why there's even branch information in the status bar. This was announced in May 2024, made it into insider builds a year later, and snuck into Windows 11 with no fanfare in the September feature update. To enable this, open the Settings app, click System, click Advanced, then click on File Explorer. You might be prompted to "U

did you know? teleost fish maintain neutral buoyancy with their swim bladder, which they pump with gas as they descend into depths. specifically, they can pump it with hyperbaric oxygen at partial pressures of *several hundred atmospheres*
The swim bladder rete mirabile represents a very efficientcountercurrent exchanger. Oxygen and carbon dioxide mole-cules returning to the venous side of the rete mirabile will there-fore diffuse back to the arterial side, resulting in a countercur-rent multiplication of the initial increases in oxygen and carbondioxide partial pressures. The back diffusion of carbon dioxideagain is of crucial importance for the initiation of the Root effectwithin the swim bladder tissue because it results in an acidifi-cation of the arterial blood of the rete mirabile, induces the Rooteffect, and elevates oxygen partial pressure in the blood sup-plying the swim bladder tissue. The metabolic activity of gasgland cells causes further acidification, which enhances theRoot effect and the increase in oxygen partial pressure. Modelcalculations demonstrate that this dual acidification, togetherwith the very efficient countercurrent multiplication of theincreases in blood oxygen partial pressure and blood oxygencontent in the rete mirabile, can readily explain the generationof oxygen partial pressure values of up to several hundredatmospheres in swim bladder tissue of deep sea fish (10).

If it looks like there are two different fonts on this clay tablet from ancient Babylon, that’s because there are. In December of 603 BCE, a young scribe named Balāṭa made a faithful copy of a far more ancient inscription of Sîn-Kashid who had ruled Uruk over 1,000 years earlier.
Photo of a broken clay tablet fragment seen from the front, back, and sides. There is a British Museum watermark at the bottom of the image.

Photograph looking up at the densely-inscribed surface of the huge "Wordless Stele" 無字碑 for Empress Wu Zetian 武則天 (r. 690–705) at the Tang dynasty Qianling Mausoleum 乾陵 in Shaanxi.

For unknown reasons the stele for Empress Wu Zetian was originally blank, but from the Song dynasty onwards various inscriptions were engraved on its surface.

The bilingual Khitan-Chinese "Record of the Journey of the Younger Brother of the Emperor of the Great Jin" 大金皇弟都統經略郎君行記 is engraved in a prominent position near the top of the middle of the stele, the text surrounded by an elaborate decorative border.
