Incredibly proud of this. A dream for years and yet couldn't get traction with suppliers - so we did it ourselves! Hats off to superstar Eden Brent-Jones for his work on the tech. Review mills are real, they are in all our submission systems and they are compromising peer review. Let's stamp it out.

I’m afraid I’m moving quickly to the retina scan and fingerprint argument. This has been a challenge in publishing for a while and is rapidly increasing in scale. We need some real identity verification in this industry

My conclusion from this is that preprint servers (and journals!) are entering a new phase of cat and mouse trying to contain AI slop (n.b., not mundane AI use, but nonsense generation). Peer review as a filter scarcely does better to ID this stuff. We need new & better tools to ID trustworthy works.

Why do we peer review? In a new paper, we establish a self-interested reason: learning. With a quasi-experimental design applied to admin data from 55 journals, we show reviewing a paper doubles chances of citing it in future work!

So proud to work with a society publisher. We give every penny of profit to the Institute of Physics who do phenomenal work supporting physicists in research and practice. This model enables the system to be circular, with investment right back into the community we serve.

Well, my bio just got removed from the NASA site because of an order that went out to remove stuff about women in STEM.
I've only been on Threads for a full year, so a lot of people here never heard of a feature that NASA did on me talking about my love of the Moon, how I grew up in poverty, then my homelessness in the US, and then me being at NASA itself.

That's how easy it is to erase you as a person, and everything you've done. I'm not even sure how I feel right now.Tweet from: dmpineda2

Ok. I saw a post from someone at NASA whose bio was erased bc some fragile male egos are threatened by women in
STEM. So I bought the domain womeninstem.us. Who'd like to help crowdsource a website where we can house all the stories of women in STEM being censored? fuck the patriarchy
Tweet from: ginny_the_tardigrade

Hellll yess! Thank you!!

We, the current generation of women in STEM, stand with the women who came before and we will do all we can to protect those to come.
Brace yourselves, girls-- they're gonna hate this.

Glad this is being given airtime. We desperately need to rethink institutional rankings - this is what underpins institutional behavior and incentivizes misconduct. I do worry about bias though, and to what extent this info might impact equity in editorial decision making.
