This is part of what I'm referring to with many people demanding stories that reassure them they're a good person. They want the moral instruction because otherwise, rather than processing the reading experience, there's a thrum of "am I bad? am I bad? what if someone finds out I'm bad?"

stories about abuse are allowed to exist without reducing themselves to moral instruction. i think sometimes when people complain about the “romanticization” of abuse, what they're actually objecting to isn't necessarily the way abuse is being represented, but the fact that the representation doesn't provide them with constant moral reassurance. like, there is a difference between “this story frames abuse as desirable or inherently romantic” and “this story depicts abuse in an erotic/ambiguous/complicated way and doesn't repeatedly tell me that abuse is bad, therefore the depiction itself is irresponsible.”

The magic in that country was so thick and tenacious that it settled over the land like chalk-dust and over floors and shelves like slightly sticky plaster-dust. Newly minted, coin-bright, the god called Hark waits backstage. He’s about to go out to perform his first miracle, and he can hear his fans murmuring in front of the altar. They don’t know they’re the lucky ones that’ll get a visitation to enliven the community pop-up event held to celebrate his official debut day. Dreamily, he strains to catch their words—my aircon broke, I’m a sweaty mess—my husband didn’t want me to come today, but it’s the first time I’ve had energy to leave the pod in weeks—look at how shabby the decorations are—I thought Hark would have deserved better.

The god’s fingers itch. He wants to repair the aircon and give the man strength to go out into the sun every day. That is his purpose, his calling, to fix things for people. But his priest wants a big revelation, so he can’t let anyone know he’s here yet.
