The proposed congressional pay amendment was largely forgotten until 1982, when Gregory Watson, a 19-year-old student at the University of Texas at Austin, wrote a paper for a government class in which he claimed that the amendment could still be ratified. He later launched a nationwide campaign to complete its ratification.[2][3] The amendment eventually became part of the United States Constitution, effective May 5, 1992,[4] completing a record-setting ratification period of 202 years, 7 months, and 10 days, beating the previous record set by the Twenty-second Amendment of 3 years a

screenshot of a reddit post (https://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinfuriating/comments/1jb2uvt/roomba_accidentally_saw_outside_and_now_i_cant/) that reads:

subject line: Roomba accidentally saw outside and now I can't delete "room 1" and "room 4"

"The roomba automatically updates the map everytime it cleans. Normally I leave the door to the backyard closed. But today I forgot. As it was cleaning near the gate (vertical red line at the edge of room 10 & 11) it saw the backyard. The app has no way to delete a room. Very mildly infuriating indeed"

The Winter Palace
by Philip Larkin
Most people know more as they get older: I give all that the cold shoulder.
I spent my second quarter-century Losing what I had learnt at university.
And refusing to take in what had happened since. Now I know none of the names in the public prints,
And am starting to give offence by forgetting faces And swearing I've never been in certain places.
It will be worth it, if in the end I manage
To blank out whatever it is that is doing the damage.
Then there will be nothing I know.
My mind will fold into itself, like fields, like snow.

At that time, so the story goes, the Venerable Sāriputta, accompanied by five hundred monks, while making his round for alms in the village of Nālaka, came to the door of his mother’s house. His mother provided him with a seat, and as she served him with food, abused him roundly, saying, “Ho, eater of leavings! Failing to get leavings of sour rice-gruel, you therefore go from house to house among strangers, licking off the back of a ladle such sour rice-gruel as clings to it! And for this you renounced eighty billion of wealth and became a monk! You have ruined me! Eat now!” Likewise when she gave food to the monks, she said, “So you are the men who have made my son your own page-boy! Eat now!” The Venerable took the food and returned to the monastery.

Venerable Rāhula invited the Buddha to eat. Said the Buddha, “Rāhula, where did you go?” “To the village where my grandmother lives, Venerable.” “And what did your grandmother say to your preceptor?” “Venerable, my grandmother abused my preceptor roundly.” “What did she say?” “This and that, Venerable.” “And what reply did your preceptor make?” “He made no reply, Venerable.”

When the monks heard this, they began to talk about it in the hall of truth. Said they, “Brethren, how wonderful are the qualities of the Venerable Sāriputta! Even when his mother abused him in this fashion, he never got a bit angry.” The Buddha drew near and asked the monks, “Monks, what is the subject that engages your attention now as you sit here all gathered together?” “Such and such.” Then said the Buddha, “Monks, they that have rid themselves of the evil passions are free from anger.”

"One is responsible to life : It is the small beacon in that terrifying darkness from which we come and to which we shall return. One must negotiate this passage as nobly as possible, for the sake of those who are coming after us." James Baldwin, The Fire Next Time #BlackHistoryMonth
A black and white photo of James Baldwin standing in a doorway wearing dark pants, a white shirt, and dark tie. Next to this photo is white text on a black background which reads:

Perhaps the whole root of our trouble,
the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races,
armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, which is the only fact we have. It seems to me that one ought to rejoice in the fact of death - ought to decide, indeed, to earn one's death by confronting with passion the conundrum of life. One is responsible to life : It is the small beacon in that terrifying darkness from which we come and to which we shall return. One must negotiate this passage as nobly as possible, for the sake of those who are coming after us.

Towns rang a bell—a curfew bell—when it was time to cover the fire. This reminder helped prevent fires from breaking out while people were asleep. During Norman rule in England, it was also a signal to stay indoors—to prevent potential uprisings. The curfew bell is still rung in some towns today.
