Being actor-agnostic and behaviour-based is easy until it costs something.

Earlier this week the European External Action Service (EEAS), Global Affairs Canada and Lithuania decided to pull their official support from EU DisinfoLab's flagship #FIMI conference #Disinfo2026, apparently due to two conference panels framing the US as one of the players in an ever more crowded FIMI field.

According to news reports, this took place after the US government had expressed its views to its counterparts through diplomatic channels.

The timing of pulling their public support from the conference organisers seems to match the reports of increased US pressure, as the conference programme had already been published in early September.

The optics of this decision by the EEAS and others are incredibly bad. Would the same have happened if China had asked for support to be withdrawn from a conference dealing with Xinjiang? If the answer today is no, then any claims of an actor-agnostic approach to countering FIMI are basically baseless. Actions like this are also a gift to Kremlin-affiliated actors, who can keep pushing their "EU as a US vassal" narratives even harder. This will also just embolden the current US administration and its allies in Europe and elsewhere.

While removing public support does not equal stifling the conversation or trying to censor the organisers, this will stain counter-FIMI efforts for a long time and alienate the NGO community doing much of the legwork.

I know that it is easy to criticise when I don't have (political) skin in the game. But I care about standing for something, and this seems to me like another case of weakness and cowardice masquerading as statesmanship and strategic patience. We are repeating the mistakes we made earlier in placating Moscow and Beijing.
