My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area. (15 in Manhattan btw)

Congestion pricing is the perfect example here: it polls poorly before it is enacted because people do not believe the benefits but once it is enacted it becomes popular because it works. it’s the opposite of mass deportations which many people think sounds good but is a total shitshow to enact

Steal photos like this and use them at community meetings. Most of us sharing this content don’t care about credit for those types of usage, we care about change. Leaders need to understand that bike lanes aren’t just for the able-bodied. These are mobility lanes for all.

I've harped on this before, but "availability of home insurance" will keep growing as a political issue, and a whole lot of people's brains are not equipped to handle it. Insurers aren't doing stuff like this (nor leaving markets outright) for fun. Climate change is making stuff uninsurable.

Next time someone tries arguing that it’s “social engineering” (cue ominous music) to give people CHOICES to walk, bike & take public transit in their city, tell them that designing our current car DEPENDENCY has been the largest and most damaging social engineering experiment in human history.

As the car-centric suburban experiment intensified, more and more parents became convinced that it was unsafe for their kids to walk or bike to school. So parents increasingly drove their kids, paradoxically adding even more traffic, making streets even less safe.

My top mobility policy of 2024: Higher parking fees for huge cars Paris is tripling parking costs for oversized cars. Montreal, Lyon, & Cologne are taking similar steps. Giant cars worsen pollution and safety, and they use more curb space. Owners should pay extra. www.nytimes.com/2024/02/05/w...

Cars create dead space in cities. Brussels is learning it’s better to fill that space with life.
Picture of a fairly standard European street. One way. Cars parked on both sides and room for two cars abreast in the travel lane. Photo from Google street view. It's a sunny day but the street is shaded.Exact same street photographed by me. Now it has been transformed to a pedestrian street. There are tables and chairs and people walking and biking. There are no more cars. Also a sunny day.
