I’ve just walked back down and almost every car has been here for over 2 hours, generating next to zero footfall over that period. Free parking 5 minutes from Waverley? Crazy stuff from the council.

Could be glorious. Instead, 22 cars parked for free, generating next to no customers and getting in the way of disabled parking and commercial loading. All but one of these cars was parked illegally anyway.

Sat for a coffee at Elm Row and counted the traffic for 15 minutes: 343 pedestrians 52 cyclists 2 cars Remind me why we’ve turned this public square into a car park? This is probably the best connected retail location in Scotland - trams, buses, walkable, busy cycle lane. Why ruin it?

This makes an assumption that otherwise, 2026 would have exactly followed 2025. I think that's reasonable given the pattern in the last two years.

An insight into cycling trends - the introduction of Voi bikes has added about 500 additional cyclists per day to Leith Walk; the tram closure added another 250 at the peak. The Voi effect is much larger at the weekend, while the inverse is true for the tram.

There's something amazing about being in a peloton of 40+ bikes on the cycle lane heading home. Every driver at the front of a queue of side-street traffic... every person peering out of a bus window... every passer-by gets the message: "Oh wow, yeah, people are using this stuff". Never gets old.
My view travelling home by bike: Loads of people cycling on the South City Way cycle lane on Victoria Road in Govanhill in the Southside of Glasgow, during evening rush hour. A woman in front of me wears an incredibly fetching gold coloured helmet.

The hand laid sections of the link are approaching Leith Walk levels of discomfort, with pools of water whenever it rains. To think this is the flagship active travel investment, 10 years in the making.

The red circles represent people on waiting lists for current hangars (about 4,600), and the yellow circles those who have requested hangars (1,900). Given the council are currently approx 900 hangars behind demand, it’s pretty much futile to request more (except to express frustration!).

Can confirm that Braid Road, and the rest of the estate, is back to being a car traffic sewer. Took me 3x as long to get through it, *as a cyclist*. 4x close passes 2x drivers ignoring parallel crossing 2x wrong way down Braidburn Terrace 1x use of pavement as carriageway

Cycling at rush hour, it always feels like some folk’d be willing to kill you to get back for their tea 5 minutes earlier. Yesterdays example involves some Anglo-Saxon, sorry.

The funniest thing the council could do is put them out to auction. Then you’d have a good sense of just how subsidised car parking has been in Edinburgh.

I think it's well over 40,000 residential permits (equivalent in space to 240,000 cycle hangar spots).

Add this to the very long list of things the council should resolve before it thinks about more trams - hangars are self-funded, deliver more revenue than parking spaces, and latent demand for them is likely well over 10,000 (assuming that 6% of flat dwellers would want a spot).

Edward Tissiman @edtiss.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
The largest ward-level waiting list is Leith Walk, with around 1,100 people waiting on a spot. 190 additional hangars are required, with only 50 provided. As a ratio of current provision, there are 7 people for every spot in Inverleith. rpubs.com/edtiss/hanga...

The most popular hangar location is Rossie Place near Easter Road, with over 100 people on the waiting list. Across Morningside, 6% of flat dwellers have requested a spot. There are now 277 hangars across Edinburgh - to satisfy *current* demand would require an additional 938.

Edward Tissiman @edtiss.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Demand for spaces in cycle hangars in Edinburgh has increased by 2,700 (50%) in the last 12 months. After adjusting for duplication across waiting lists, I estimate that around 7,000 people currently want a spot in one - but Edinburgh Council only provide 1,500 spaces. rpubs.com/edtiss/hangars

I think the lesson from all sorts of driving offences is impounding vehicles is the most effective solution. An unavoidable and painful deterrent. Family friend made a mistake with insurance and got left in a layby by police. Won't make that mistake again.

This comment from Reddit demonstrates why Edinburgh needs to tow vehicles rather than just ticket them. These are the vans blocking pedestrian crossings, cycle lanes, bus lanes, bus stops, disabled parking… Why do we allow such rampant rule breakers to negotiate a penalty? Tow them.

I just think we have to work on the assumption that the active travel infrastructure associated with the new line will be the same quality as Leith Walk. Rubbish design (already the case), dreadful implementation (I’d bet good money).

... if they finish Leith Walk off, or indeed start any of the umpteen perma-delayed cycle infrastructure in the city, then I'd consider lending them an ear on trams to Granton.

I've sent a draft petition to Edinburgh Council asking it to: *do everything it can to investigate and put in place measures to temporarily mend or brace the bridge or hire a replacement, while a longer term solution is sorted out.* May get rejected as council already working on the issue.

I wonder how much they are spending on Silverknowes Road. It's been a brilliant - but accidental - bit of active travel infrastructure, now being torn up and resurfaced for motor vehicles at what I assume is great cost.

Blessed be the Lothian Buses drivers who stop at Zebra Crossings on George Street during the Princes Street closure. Can we nominate them for a collective MBE, a bit like Malta during the war?

Also - the cheek from the council proposing this while Leith Walk remains riddled with defects and cyclists are making successful claims for damages… fixing it first should be a strict condition of additional tram infrastructure - pour encourager les autres.

The litmus test was whether an active travel bridge over the railway would be contructed between the new Roseburn Link and the Roseburn Path as part of the development. Instead, the plans show a convoluted, low-quality diversion crossing a major road. Test failed, this is Leith Walk Mk.2.

Basically, if your sole objective is to reduce car traffic in Edinburgh, there are likely better ways to spend the £3 billion. I'm a bit concerned about the lack of "opportunity cost" discussions going on here.
121
Edward Tissiman @edtiss.bsky.social · 25/08/2026
A challenge to that is that the tram will simply displace more bus and cycle commuters than drivers. Only 40% of car commutes start and end within the bypass, and over 90% of these already have a viable alternative available to them. It's the 60% that cross the bypass that need better provision.

The lack of enforcement in the city centre is baffling. SUVs parked in the bus lane on North Bridge is just one example.

I suspect some of the surge in cycling is actually caused by the hindrance of Lothian Buses by private vehicle use. It's much, much quicker to get through central Edinburgh by bicycle, particularly in August.

Currently stuck in a traffic jam on North Bridge, caused by illegally parked cars and private drivers in the bus lane. @stephenjenkinson.bsky.social It was actually quicker with only two lanes. We’ve been overtaken by 9 Voi bikes so far.

Data from the city's previous hire bike scheme, Just Eat, is available - and it's brilliant for showing where latent demand for cycling exists, and where we should be investing in more cycle infrastucture. This is an extract from 20th June, 2020 (rpubs.com/edtiss/justeat) :

Yet another all-time record set on the Leith Walk cycle lane - 2,582 cyclists on 22nd July 2026. I suspect much of the surge this year is due to the brilliant success of Voi hire e-bikes. @edinburghminute.com @edi.bike @spokes.org.uk @edinreporter.bsky.social

I wonder if there’s some sort of mad contract with JCDecaux or the company behind the bus trackers which has made it prohibitively expensive. Alternatively, ECC have looked at Glasgow and the M8 for inspiration.
