How does sleep consolidate muscle memories? New research from @mstephensonjones.bsky.social lab & @gatsbyucl.bsky.social in @natneuro.nature.com reveals that motor-skill memories are replayed in the striatum during sleep, independently of the hippocampus. www.sainsburywellcome.org/blog/muscle-...

Muscle memories: how does sleep produce consolidation? | Sainsbury Wellcome Centre
Sleep not only makes us feel better, but it’s vital for helping us form memories and learn new skills. For many years, neuroscientists have studied how the brain consolidates episodic memories during ...

Lack of empathy is a prerequisite for some rational decisions. of course it also leads to horrific acts, but in balance seem to have worked. if it still works in todays society or not (likely the later) is another question

History and genetics leading to a fairly cataclysmic event. Needed the outside world to align, the people you meet, the things you read. A changing tracks with pharmacology, not the only way but works most reliably.

Spot on. As long as story = your experiential and genetic history, and not the voice in the head which is very good at justifying behaviour post hoc.

Plus there is the ~1 % (or rather 2% of the Y-chromosome carrying population) who are psychopaths to a varying degree. Selected by evolution for the tough times to ensure the rational decisions for survival.

You can’t change what your mind does in the moment. You can change what it will do by learning. So yes, we adapt, you are right. What I mean in practical terms that under limited resources, food, water, shelter, humans will always fight. Self-concept is just a nebulous wrapper to make us feel good.

Ede Rancz @ederancz.bsky.social · 14/06/2026
Your logic implies agency to change the behaviour, free will of you wish. There is no proof of that. If anything, most experiments prove that there is no such thing. The best you can do is observe your mind and learn from the experience.

100s of millions years of evolution selected behaviours to optimise passing on our genes under an environment of scarce resources. We protect our in-group, fight any out-group, the worse the conditions, the worse the fight. We just can’t do otherwise.

Communication - and narrative - at one point must invoke a concept of self, and thus the special me is born. The concept of us and them is close - e.g. neighbouring riots of chimpanzee. So perhaps more of a continuum then I thought initially.

Interesting article on something I think is very relevant to open science: several teams analyzed the same ephys dataset and got quite different answers. Not because the analyses were bad, but because this kind of work involves many analysis choices, and those choices can change the result.

Someone asked me what makes us, humans, special. We were talking about the brain. I keep thinking about it, but so far the only special thing about us I could come up with is that we are the only animals who think they are special.

The wrongdoing happens first; the airtight moral narrative arrives moments later, fully formed, experienced as genuine reasoning rather than damage control. Cognitive dissonance resolved not by changing the behaviour, but by quietly renovating the conscience around it.

Should look up some recent definitions of thinking, mental image, "coming up", ... Evaluation requires having some sort of mental images to compare, no? My intuition (=bias) is that all these processes exist in mammalian brains but to widely different "power". Mammalian panpsychism, if you wish.

I do disagree. Creativity does not come from ether, but rather from information processing, internal models, biases, etc… Sure, current LLMs are not equivalent, but calling them a calculator, a logic circuit and reserving what we call creativity to some wetware in our cranium is dangerous. IMO
