Brookes are my go-to running shoe, they last forever and they do turn up on sale. But it depends on your gait: if you can get a gait analysis in a sports shop you may find you don’t need anything too spendy.

Cannot wait to read Mixtape, a round up of the 1980s alternative scene in Dublin, and not just because my cousin is one of the busking veterans interviewed in it: jrnl.ie/7150576 #speirgorm

Why nostalgia can be 'a bit like snorting Pop Rocks': Sharing memories of 1980s Dublin

A new book explores what Dublin City was like in the 1980s by speaking to those who were there.

As of Cabinet yesterday, one now needs the ability to communicate in order to be considered a citizen. Yet in the first three months of 2026, not a single child in ten counties was given a plan on how the State would deliver them with speech and language therapy. This week’s column @thejournal.ie:

Gavan Reilly: Six months by law. 24.3 months in reality. Ireland's disability numbers don't add up

The eye-watering numbers of children waiting for Assessment of Need in this country expose a broken system offering little hope to families.

UK good on integration. One reason behind rising academic standards is that second generation immigrants do well. There are high levels of intermarriage, comparitively, and a high proportion of immigrants identifying as British. Why take notes from Nordic countries which don't do as well as we do.

Brussels not looking too shabby this evening. We will draw a polite veil over Brussels Airport because the rest of the city has been an early autumn delight.

It’s Shelley Winters’ film IMO. She is amazing in it.

I met some spectacular old rainforest oaks just outside Bandon the other day. Trees this size are now insanely rare in Ireland. Hard to believe they were once extremely commonplace.

Air pollution stunts children’s lung growth. New Queen Mary research found that improvements in air quality after the introduction of London’s ULEZ are associated with accelerated lung growth in children. Read more: shorturl.at/Jx86o

Incredible research shows how the lungs of London children have been affected by harmful emissions. When air pollution is reduced, lungs can grow properly again.

Saw that film far too young at a neighbour’s house, walked home alone terrified of the leylandii trees in everyone’s gardens, which do look kind of triffid like if you’re impressionable.

They’ve all gone to roost (or to hide). I remember the last eclipse, all the ducks on the pond in Finsbury Park just did that duck head-under-wing thing and went to sleep till it was over.

Seagulls and corvids do not like the partial eclipse around these parts and are making a noise about it. Pigeons seem chill. I love the uncanny not-quite-right twilight. Cat is feigning indifference.
