Something I find interesting/curious is that City Council is required to have open public meetings and to regularly hear open public comments but there isn’t really a similar requirement for the Mayor even though the Mayor arguably has greater power.

Cities have existed much longer than cars. But over the last century older cities were redesigned to accommodate cars and many newer cities were built around them as the primary mode of transportation. The more “car-centric” a city is, the less livable it is and less character it has.

If Seattle and every jurisdiction in the region followed Bothell’s lead, we could make an enormous difference in housing affordability, creating more walkable and livable neighborhoods, and transitioning away (as we must) from subsidizing and over-reliance on vehicles for daily transportation.

INBOX: More than 50 Washington State legislators and local elected officials have written an urgent letter to Gov. Bob Ferguson to demand he take all possible actions to help bring home Tuan Phan, a Vietnamese American who was deported to South Sudan and is currently in Djibouti.
June 23, 2025 The Honorable Bob Ferguson Governor of Washington State PO Box 40002 Olympia, WA 98504-0002 Dear Governor Ferguson, As elected officials from across Washington, we are committed to a nation and a state where all people are equally protected under the law, including immigrants and people of color. Washington State is proudly home to diverse immigrant and refugee communities – some who have lived here most of their lives, others who recently arrived. This is the time for us to stand up. It is incumbent on us, as Washington state’s elected leaders, to do everything in our power to protect the immigrant communities that now face unprecedented threats to their lives at the hands of the Trump administration. We are writing to you with three requests: 1. We ask that you take immediate action to protect Washington resident Tuan Phan, whose life is currently in peril at the hands of the Trump administration, by granting him a pardon. 2. We ask that you use the power of your office to speak out against the cruelty of the Trump Administration’s mass deportation agenda. 3. We ask that you continue to work with the state Legislature in resolving the Washington state Department of Corrections (DOC) cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). For weeks, Tuan has been detained virtually incommunicado by U.S. authorities on a military base in Djibouti where he is being held in a shipping container and shackled by the feet. The Trump administration seeks to deport him to South Sudan, currently one of the most violent countries in the world, where he will be in danger. Tuan is from Vietnam. He came to the United States as a refugee when he was nine years old and grew up in Tacoma. At the age of 18, he was convicted of a crime and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He completed that sentence in March of this year, after which DOC officials transferred him to ICE. We call on you to immediately pardon Tuan. Doing so would save his life. It would allow him to be freed from U.S. custody, restore his lawful permanent residency, and return home to his wife and family in Tacoma. Over the past few months, the Trump administration has resorted to inhumane cruelty in carrying out its mass deportation agenda. It has blatantly violated court orders to spirit people away to dangerous countries and foreign prisons to perhaps never be seen or heard from again. It has sent plain clothes immigration officers into courtrooms, workplaces, commercial stores, and onto school and university campuses to arrest people simply for exercising their First Amendment rights. In raids in Southern California this past month, ICE wielded tear gas and flash-bang grenades to make arrests, denied lawyers access to their clients, and attacked protesters. In an unprecedented escalation, the administration has now deployed the National Guard and Marines on the streets of Los Angeles, all in the name of the expulsion of immigrants from our communities. In every way, the Trump administration is using its mass deportation agenda to kick down every guardrail in our democracy against the excesses of executive power. It is deliberately inflicting cruel and unusual harm on the people in their custody. They are succeeding, and we are letting them. These actions are unjust, dangerous, and in direct violation of the values and laws we hold dear. They undermine the very idea of equal protection and human dignity — and they threaten the rule of law in every state, including our own. We call on you to join us in using the power of your office to daylight these issues. For the sake of immigrant and refugee communities across Washington who are the fabric of our towns and cities — we urge you to act: show up at places where immigrants are vulnerable — in courthouses, near day laborer sites, and wherever ICE is present.
