When a loved one comes out to you, your positive reaction becomes the story they tell for the rest of their life about the moment they knew they were safe. Make it a story worth telling.

I finished listening to Damsel today, written by Elana K Arnold & narrated by Elizabeth Knowelden. A prince rescues a damsel from a dragon - but she's got no memories of her life before, & no family concerned about her fate. The damsels never do. 💙📚 📚🪐

We need more wildlife #crossings! And bills in the US House & Senate would fund them: the Wildlife Road Crossings Program Reauthorization Act of 2025 provides long-term funding for wildlife crossings. Both House & Senate bills have bipartisan support, so there's a chance of getting them passed.

The book group selection for September is Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice. It's an apocalypse story set in a remote reservation up in Canada. We never find out the cause, we just see how the community handles things (or not). & it's not sci fi or fantasy... 💙📚

If you see this, post your getaway vehicle. (There's even a Matchbox banana car!) (This is a picture from the Detroit Free Press. I didn't see it this summer, but it's always a crapshoot on where it's going to be.)
A ginormous 4-seater banana car pulled over by a Michigan State Police SUV.

There's no hood on the banana, just a wind screen, so it's not even a convertible.

I'd like to remind people that today's "clanker" discourse started with a video by a prosthetics user saying that people were using the term "clanker" at her, because of the prosthetics. However you feel about AI, please remember that some people are using that term to refer to prosthetics users.

I think that I finally understand the root of the malaise in U.S. society. There are no social sanctions for being an asshole. People can be absolutely horrible to one another, but provided they are affluent and white, there is no social penalty. We need to stigmatize assholes.

This month's book club pick was Freezing Point, written by Anders Bodelsen & translated from the Danish by Joan Tate. A fiction editor in 1973, diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, becomes one of the first people to be "frozen down". He's awakened in 1995 & 2022, & each time things are worse.
A head with spiky hair is poking up out of a file box, with conspicuous tears. The title is angled around the image, with the author's name on the side of the box. Icicles are hanging off of everything.

Before the semester begins, can you look at your schedule and find 30m a day to take a break? Ideally it's lunch or dinner (depending on when you work) - time to fuel up on more than mini Snickers bars and string cheese (I speak from experience). But rest your brain. Walk. Stare at a wall.

Fine, have a cat. Fancy is napping in a short cat tree by a window. Looks uncomfortable, but what do I know? She's the cuddliest cat I've ever known. Not a bad inheritance. 😸
A tortoiseshell cat napping in the brown shag-carpet-covered "cup" of a cat tree, with her chin propped on the edge. Out thru the window you can see a bit of the deck & the railing for the stairs.

Finished up The Trouble with Poetry & Other Poems by Billy Collins, for the poetry slot in the Booksweet challenge. Plain language, funny, & profound. (Also short.) Poetry is better when it doesn't rhyme? At least for me. How do you get chosen to be a poet laureate anyways? 💙📚
The cover is a head-&-shoulders portrait of a black bear, against an orangish background. (Look at those ears! This is an easy one in #KnockKnockWhosBear.) The author's name is in the bottom quarter, in dark orangish letters on a white background.

I bought a signed copy of T Kingfisher's Wolf Worm. A scientific illustrator is hired to help an entomologist with his book on parasitic insects in the post-Reconstruction South. Only, what happened to the previous illustrator? & why is the wildlife acting so weird? 💙📚 📚🪐 @tkingfisher.com
This is a beautiful cover! I very pretty plant is wound into the words of the title - only on second glance, it's unsettling. The roots are blood red, the curved stem has pupae & flies hanging down instead of flowers, & the 2 red flowers have pollen-bearing stamens that look like jaws full of teeth. Also, there's hornworm caterpillar clinging to the stem that has a dozen or more parasitic wasp eggs attached to it.

The U.S. Secretary of Defense just stated that—so far—the war with Iran has cost $37.5 billion dollars. That's since February. That same amount is how much the United States spent on planetary science from FY2013 through FY2026 inclusive. Thirteen years of planetary science or five months of war.
The Curiosity rover on Mars. At about $2.6 billion, it buys you about ten days of Iran war.

I forgot about this book! Tempests & Slaughter by Tamora Pierce. This is a Tortall book, which is why I picked it up. Ozorne, who later grows up to be Emperor Mage of Carthak, is one of 3 young prodigies at the imperial University - bound by fate, fated for trouble. But it's not his story.
The title is in fancy gold letters. The background picture is a single white feather, the bottom of which was dipped in gold. There's a puddle of gold that had dropped off the feather. Some of the letters look like they're dripping too.

I read Lucy Foley's The Guest List for my "destination wedding" category. (Thanks to the person at Booksweet for the recommendation!) The destination? Murder. OK, the destination is actually a tiny island off the coast of Ireland. But it's a murder mystery, not a romance. 💙📚
"Lucy Foley - The Guest List" is written in large yellow letters, along with a built-in circle showing that this is a Reese's Book Club pick. The tag line, in hard-to-read aqua is "You'd kill to be on it". The picture behind the title is a craggy grey island with a grey stone almost-castle rising up out of a grey sea, with grey storm clouds filling the space behind the words. You're in a boat, with a smidge of railing visible & rain rolling down the "windshield", heading towards this foreboding grey island.
