This rather lengthy post from me this morning is a reminder that The Kennedy Center isn't simply a building. It's a *memorial* monument to John F. Kennedy - a man who not only lost his life to assassination while serving our nation as President, but who was also a highly decorated World War II veteran.

A lot of Americans these days probably don't know or remember that in 1944, only sixteen years before being inaugurated as our nation's youngest president, twenty-seven year old Jack Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Medal, as well as the Purple Heart for the almost unbelievable bravery and valor he demonstrated when his PT Boat was hit by a Japanese destroyer while on patrol one night in the Solomon Islands. Despite being badly injured himself, Kennedy is credited with saving the lives of ten men over fifteen hours spent in the water, including swimming more than 3.5 miles while towing one badly burned fellow crew member to safety by gripping the strap of the man's life jacket in his (Kennedy's) teeth. So The Kennedy Center isn't just a memorial to a slain president, but also to one of the most famous heroes of WWII.
