Pen, watercolor, pencil, and copic marker.

Our guy is out on the open water at night. Silhouetted against a purplish night sky he paddles a small boat with a single oar through a massive congregation of alligators. He had told the gators earlier that their eyes would sparkle in the moonlight. Reader, he was correct and he lets the gators know. “Gators,” he says. “ I told ya your eyes would sparkle in the moonlight.”

It's decorative gourd season, motherf*ckers. (Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Autumn, 1573, Musée du Louvre)
A work by Arcimboldo, who, being a complete and wonderful weirdo with the patronage of Holy Roman Emperors, spent his time painting absolutely nutso “portrait busts” of abstract concepts including seasons, archetypes, and elements. This one is Autumn made up of autumnal fruits, foliage, and, of course, gourds.

I've been thinking a lot lately about this 1943 watercolor—Untitled (Police Beating)—by Norman Lewis. What's striking is not only depiction of violence, a subject for many Black artists, but also the onlooker who responds gleefully: recognition there will always be those who exult in state violence
Watercolor of the scene of a police officer beating a prone Black figure with a truncheon, with two white onlookers present, one of them appearing almost gleeful at the sight

Hendrick Andriessen, Vanitas Still Life, ca. 1650, Mount Holyoke College Art Museum
Still-life painting of objects on a table, which is covered in a black cloth. At the center of the pile of objects is a skull crowned in wheat, sitting atop a book. To the left of the skull is a bouquet of flowers, including an iris and tulip; a letter with a laurel crown resting on top of it; an open gold watch on a red ribbon; and a smoldering match cord. Directly in front of the skull is an oyster shell with bubble juice (bubbles float and burst in the air above the table). To the right of the skull is a silver candlestick, with the artist visible in two reflections; a mitre and staff; a sprig of holly; a crown and scepter; and a medal of St. George on a blue ribbon. Behind these objects is a globe.

Juan de Valdés Leal, In Ictu Oculi, 1671–72, Hospital de la Caridad, Sevilla
Painting, with a rounded top, of a skeleton standing on the right holding a coffin, shroud, and scythe in its left arm and pointing to the words "IN ICTU OCULI" with its right hand. The skeleton stands on a globe with its left foot and on a pile of worldly goods with its right, including armor, swords, cloth, books, images including a triumphal arch, papal garments and attributes, and royal crowns and insignia. The skeleton's pointing right hand also seems to extinguish a long taper candle.

A remarkable ancient Iberian silver patera (offering dish) with a wolf devouring a human head (!), encircled with snakes. It’s surrounded by two friezes: one showing nine hunting scenes, the other a procession of male and female centaurs. In Iberian culture, the wolf was a psychopomp … 🏺 1/ 📸 me
This silver patera features a sculptural central medallion depicting a wolf’s head with gaping jaws devouring a human head, all encircled by thick snakes. Surrounding this are two friezes: one showing hunting scenes divided into nine sections, and another, separated from the first by a border of dots, depicting a procession of male and female centaurs arranged in a metope-like layout. A gilded running-scroll pattern (<i>postas</i>) around the rim frames the entire scene. Numerous gilded highlights accentuate the figures. Iconographically, the piece combines Hellenistic and Iberian elements.

A crayon artist sits with their legs crossed in a chair next to a wall they have covered in dinosaur illustrations. They are wearing overalls and a bandana. They exude the confidence of an artist who has seen their vision to completion. However, like many creators, their vision is not shared by everyone. They are confronted by a man in a sweater vest, “Heard you been drawin dinosaurs on my walls.” The artist replies, “You heard right.”

Artist’s note: I try to do my drawings quickly so they maintain that spontaneous feel I’m going for (something we’ve discussed in previous posts). For this one I ended up redrawing the artist’s pose and subtle facial expression over and over again until it felt right.
