A joy collaborating on this 2023 NEH-funded public event with Peabody Essex Museum (maritime curator Daniel Finamore) and scholars Revell Carr, Pallas Catenella, and Rebecca Marchand for which well over 100 showed up in a snowstorm to sing and learn about sea shanties. Alas I had the flu that day.

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

The long-awaited Art Songs of the Burgundian Era, 1415-1480, by David Fallows has arrived on my desk. Navigating this repertory for the last 25+ years has been made possible because of David’s 1999 catalogue and I’m excited to engage and argue with his systematic analysis of more than 1000 songs.

From a few weeks back at the wonderful Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in VT. So much fun collaborating with brilliant musicians to bring Mendelssohn Op13 to life. Also got to work with other quartets while talking about Prokofiev 2nd, Shosty 4th, Montgomery’s Strum, and Mendelssohn Op80.
