I recently learned the phrase: "Bâtir des châteaux en Espagne", which like 'Castles in the Air', refers to impossible dreams of happiness. And after nearly 2 years in Paris, Mme de Sévigné's reply 'One need only be in Spain to lose all desire to build castles there' rings true.

I was going to ask if, like other Christopher Nolan movies, "The Odyssey" has a lot of mumbling/hard-to-hear dialogue. Now I've got one more reason to not go watch the film.

And now for something completely different. Stumbled upon a gravestone today, which had been half swallowed by edaphoecotropism, only for all the branches to be cut away, leaving a grave with a dominating cloak of wood.
A large grave stone. Leaning towards the earth, half encased in the entwined branches and roots of what used to be a small tree.

The grave is for an Emily, who died in 1898c, aged only 37.

In the background an Essex church glows in low sunshine.
A side angle on the grave. And the grave from behind, showing the rear of the stone to be entirely cloaked in tree.

Christopher Anderson
“Union workers, especially garment workers, built this country.”Growing up a child actor in Kingston, Jamaica, Christopher Anderson's family told him to pick a trade. At thirteen, he chose tailoring. Mentored by sartorial artists across Jamaica, London, and New York, he now holds the title of Master Tailor at Saks Fifth Avenue — and serves as shop steward for Workers United, the union representing Saks employees.
Fifty years into his practice, Christopher traces tailoring's history from ancient men clumsily wrapping themselves in fabric to the precision of modern suits. Sartorial art evolved on the backs of workers. He speaks of the European women garment workers who founded Amalgamated Bank after being denied loans elsewhere. "Union workers, especially garment workers, built this country." Without his union, he says, it would be far harder to be a working artist. He hopes the next generation carries on the twin legacies of art and labor power.

In the 1820s, British potters figured out something clever. Americans would pay more for plates with American buildings on them. So factories in Staffordshire, England started cranking out dinner sets decorated with scenes of places they'd never been. Hotels, capitols, canals.

My father, rooting about his shelves, found a book he’d inherited from his father. Opened it for the first time. Inside an inscription. My grandfather, Robert C Miller, was a US airforce metrologist. He developed the first tornado forecast. The inscription is during the development of that forecast
A green hardback of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.Inside the book an inscription, in beautiful swooping cursive penmanship:

To Major R.C. Miller

For those moments while you’re waiting for the forecast to verify - a few meditations of another misunderstood genius.

This installation marks a continuing preoccupation with life patterns in two cities: Paris and Hong Kong. These grooves and tiles mark the consciousness of residents in varied ways: our feet, neighborhoods, and identities.

Having been designed for a previous century, they provoke a sense of nostalgia or decay in those of us who live and work among them, a subtext to our lives. Though often ignored, they become an indelible part of our memories.Gilt Nostalgia
