It's a safety-net paradox. Blue State/Purple-State Rs have never actually felt the true pain of unfettered Republican rule like red-state republicans bc the Dems soften the impact. They feel safe voting R bc the Dems they hate make it safe for them to do so w/o suffering the consequences.

Do they settle because it costs a lot of money to litigate? Because they're at risk of losing federal funding? What are the ways that the Justice Department is able to coerce these hospitals?
Rep. Grace Meng: I mean, all of the above, right? I'm the top Democrat on the Appropriations
subcommittee that oversees all the DOJ funding. And we have seen this as we've been negotiating our budgets with them. They tried to include over 50 anti-GBTQ riders, what we call poison pills, into the budget. And we, as House Democrats, were able to take them all out. But they wanted to insert 52 pieces of wording and legislation that would have restricted medically necessary health care for transgender people, basically allowing taxpayer-funded discrimination against same-sex couples, blocking any non-discriminatory and DEl-type efforts.
But they are persistent, so they try it through the budget process, and they can't do that. Obviously, they're trying to cheat by coercing these hospitals:
