Ergative structures show how languages organize meaning — not every sentence needs someone “doing” the action. Studies like this help us understand how verbs express states and events, a topic still little known outside linguistics classrooms. doi.org/10.25189/267... #linguistics #langsky
A mint-green background with a centered white box containing text from Cadernos de Linguística. The header reads “OPEN REVIEW | CADERNOS DE LINGUÍSTICA.” Below, the title “EXCERPT FROM PUBLIC REVIEW¹” appears, followed by the reviewer’s name, Arabie Bezri Hermont. The main paragraph states that research like this is important for understanding the emergence of ergative structures and the verbal category of aspect, concepts still little known among most basic education teachers. A note at the bottom cites the article The state as a derived aspect: a syntactic–semantic analysis, by L. Meirelles (2025).

We are losing something by having newsrooms where everyone who has more than a few years’ experience has gotten fired. I don’t fault a young writer for not knowing about things that happened before she was born. But now there are no editors to help give context to these stories, either.
