"Modern vernacular fantasy ideas get read backwards into a text that is perceived as having originated them but which doesn’t really contain them" is such a good way to put that phenomenon, holy shit. I've always wanted to find the right way to articulate that point.

with hardware prices going up and up I think it'd be fun to see a return to older consoles and gaming using physical storage media. maybe I should get an optical drive (doubt those are going to be getting more expensive) and burn things on CDs again

Genuinely, this concern about AI is one of the reasons why I think having friction in video games is good and why it's increasingly important to have games that simply exist instead of catering to our expectations. Reposting this message from Kojima about "pre-digested" art:
And he said, "If everyone likes it, it means it's mainstream. It means it's conventional. It means it's already pre-digested for people to like it. And I don't want that. I want people to end up liking things they didn't like when they first encountered it, because that's where you really end up loving something."

We Lose Our Way
What is the color of your story? What are the themes? If you're running a game for friends, you hold a great deal of responsibility in guiding the narrative, and in the act of telling the tale you are dictating its bounds. Where does your lens linger and why? Ultimately you have to look at yourself and the material you're running at some point and say: "What are we even doing here?" Look at your average dungeon game and the answer is pretty obvious: you're killing monsters and acquiring resources. But you, as the storyteller, are the one who gets to decide what is a monster.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a promo image for Imitation Crab, an affable crab holding a microphone. Text on the panel says: LIVE COMEDY SHOW. Panel 2: the Imitation Crab is on stage standing in a spotlight with a wig and face paint to look like the Joker. It says, “you wanna know how I got these claws?” Panel 3: two friends are sitting in the audience at a table in the dimly lit nightclub. One leans to the other and asks, “you paid for these tickets?” The other, with his head in his hand, replies, “I won them at work.”
