Steph Curry who?

I look at enough projects that are stymied by county or township level permitting to think the benefits of the permitting bill in terms of easing development might be a bit overstated (or at least limited in geographic scope)

Been seeing a lot of mixed reviews on Digger. But what I really need to know is if it's a good movie for climate/energy people, general audience appeal is kinda irrelevant to me.

I did some super cursory poking on exactly this question, and it looks like there's a few provisions: 20M/year for CEQ to disburse to agencies for training (sec. 1133) Minor expansion to FERC special hiring power (sec. 2241) Geothermal ombuds and permitting task force (sec. 2224)

Whether lithium mining at rhyolite ridge causes tiehms buckwheat to be extinct in the wild is a single species conservation outcome question more so than a broader community level biodiversity question. But "biodiversity" is a convenient shorthand for that range of concerns.

David Savage @dtsavage.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
There's a lot of different metrics for biodiversity out there, but the best framing in this particular context is probably "reduced extinction risk for species of conservation concern"

The framing of "I really hope you succeed but I'd bet money that you won't" seems to be a hard one for people to accept.

2. How much improvement should we really expect from this package in areas where the bottleneck is often permitting at the township or county level rather than at the federal level

David Savage @dtsavage.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
1. What is the message that the pro-permitting-reform coalition would like to send to people more focused on biodiversity or public lands who may be skeptical of the package and feel like they're being thrown under the bus

As somebody who used to work on biodiversity and now works on energy absolutely second this. And it's not like biodiversity orgs don't care about clean energy. Just look at Audubon's work on transmission for a really nice example.

People shouldn't be shocked that biodiversity and public lands organizations care about biodiversity and public lands even when climate is also nominally part of those organizations' portfolios.

Even if we accept that's true for the sake of argument, that in 2036 data centers are carbon-neutral, that's still a decade of dozens of gigawatts worth of gas generation that they'd need to pay back in carbon terms.

It's pretty simple: the competition has been extremely weak. Choosin' Texas is a good song, but in a stronger year it wouldn't have stayed number one. Nothing more complicated than that.

The Emma Frost x Miss Piggy comic has hit the internet and it's so, so, so much more magnificent than I ever could have hoped for
Emma Frost: "Emma Frost, darling. I'm a telepath. May I read your mind to ascertain if you're telling the truth?"

Miss Piggy: "But of course, darling I am an open book, a tell-all memoir."Emma Frost telepathically witnessing the entirety of Miss Piggy's life.Wolverine: "Frost? She legit?"
Emma Frost: "She's..She's... She's everything. And I would die for her."

It's good to see this argument articulated, but I'm seeing a lot more dollars discussed than tons. The key question is in what year if ever the carbon reductions AI supposedly enables begin to outweigh the cumulative emissions of the gas buildout to support it. heatmap.news/ideas/ai-cli...

One weird thing about energy/climate academia is how many people choose to do lots of unnecessary and harmful stuff (fly lots, eat lots of beef, drive fossil vehicles lots, etc.). I get that we need policy and system change, but also, doesn't this it undermine credibility after a point?

The idea that "regenerative" grazing is a climate solution has really taken hold in some quarters. But the science is clear: It doesn't work. Methane and land-use emissions just overwhelm any soil carbon benefits. Here's a great piece by @nicholasdcarter.bsky.social drawdown.org/insights/eig...
