Absolutely delightful Roman period socketed-terminal in the form of a Ram's head - possibly with a piggy snout 🤔🧐? Found as part of a sacred spring deposit on Ynys Mon/Anglesey & now on display in the brilliant Oriel Môn (Anglesey Museum) until next Easter - essential viewing! 👌 📷 My own

The menhir of St-Eden near Porznéjen in Plouescat (Finistère) is 6m tall and has 2 large depressions on one side caused by natural weathering but 30 cupules on one face are man made. It is on the coast and this c.1909 card by Neurdein has 2 men looking out to sea.

Now that I am safely back down out of the Rhinog mountains here are some more views of the Craig y Dinas hillfort. While considered to be Iron Age it reminded me a lot of small Early Medieval defended sites. The 2m wide wall is impressive as is the passage entrance. #HillfortsWednesday

Had a lovely day visiting sites in Monmouthshire with @drtobydriver.bsky.social and @churchillarch.bsky.social Our 1st stop was prompted by an interesting artefact reported to PAS Cymru, and the 2nd was Ysgyryd Fawr to check out the Iron Age earthworks still visible along the trail 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 #archaeology
Selfie with me to the left wearing a black PAS Cymru fleece and ball cap, Toby to the right wearing a red Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales hoodie. We are smiling in front of a murky pool. Photo of the hillfort from a higher vantage point on a stone outcrop, looking down the slope with Toby and Katie to the left. Nice to see the parch marks of the late Flavian fort at Caersws appearing on the latest Google Earth coverage. The inner roads and stone defence wall along with eastern road and multiple defensive ditches can all be seen. The earlier Flavian campaign fort defences also appear east of the village.

Very nice. Think some Montgomeryshire data includes new 2026 imagery - understandable with the months of clear skies for survey Got some aerial shots of the earlier fort this summer but most of my flights in central Wales were dogged by wind!

Insights from above
Last month we shared images from Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, highlighting how recent drought conditions have revealed the outlines of long-buried archaeological remains. Features both familiar and newly identified have also been emerging across Wales this summer, and have been documented by Dr Toby Driver, the Senior Investigator for Aerial Survey at the Royal Commission.
