Gardening for wildlife in Devon. Sharing my untidy oasis with hedgehogs, newts, snakes, birds and lots of things I can't name yet. And two Airedales.

Well I’ve discovered the only thing that makes dog #2 bark. Now I’m stuck playing it on repeat while he tilts his head at my iPad 😂

64 years ago, on the 27th of September 1962, Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was published. It handled the environmental harm caused by the pesticide DDT and the disinformation spread by the chemical industry. Carson managed to sway public opinion and even policy. #otd #history 🗃️

Hey, if we want to limit AI to prevent the much publicised threat of servitude and annihilation, we don’t need fancy legislation. Just ban data centres. Save water. Save energy. Save land. Save people living with omnipresent hum.

Funnel Web spiders Redback spiders Huntsman spiders The dark space under the bed Giant cartoon eyes that I dreamt chased me down the street The willow tree that I rested my head against that had a heartbeat The call of the Mopoke in the dark of the night (I’d love it now)

I’ve been using Ms for nearly 50 years, but it staggers me how many women still bridle at using it, thinking it means you’re divorced or ‘unfeminine’.

Note to self: never clip both Airedales at the same time because you can’t tell them apart. Until there’s trouble afoot, when you can bet it’s the girl.
Two Airedale terriers sitting on a garden bench. They both stare intently at the camera and the one at the front has a smile with a bit of pink tongue showing. The one behind looks like all his brain cells are being utilised trying to determine if there is a possible food treat to come.

I’m not sure what’s sillier, two people with no DIY skills building a log cabin, or doing it in a heatwave. I’m exhausted and I still haven’t finished.

A fantastic (and stinking hot) visit to the Halberton Roman Villa excavation today. Extraordinary that anything survived ploughing, but multiple buildings inc opus signinum plunge pool, a lovely mosaic and lots of teasing hints at activity. The village is all abuzz!
Centre of damaged mosaic in red Devon soil, with white, blue and red tesserae in clear patternsA large ceramic vessel lying on its side embedded in red Devon soil, with the topside missing. The remaining side shows a flat bottom, and a big thick rolled collar

Devonians were horrified to learn last week of plans for a massive AI data centre near Great Torrington, north Devon. The proposals from company XLinks Ltd would cover 850 acres of farmland. But who owns the land? I decided to investigate. 1/ www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We used to be swarmed with flies. Fly swats in every room and a hunt before getting into bed. Flypaper hanging from light fittings. I even hoovered them off the walls. Our dogs reacted with glee at the command “get the fly”. Then suddenly it stopped. Why? The chicken farm down the road closed.

Just a reminder that this project is partially funded by Elon Musk. Where money comes from matters. Remember that DOGE fired hundreds & cancelled grants for hundreds more. I just can’t care about a carbonized scroll when it’s funded by fascism. hyperallergic.com/why-is-there...

What a proud day for men’s tennis. What I’ve learned over the years is that a man credibly reported for horrific interpersonal violence can redeem himself by winning at the top echelon of a sport. You love to see it. Good times all around.

terrible. 20 years ago, the internet was full of hobbyist blogs and forums. over time, these have been replaced by paywalled substacks and private discord channels, each a walled garden. google's decision to prioritize AI just makes it less likely people will create free, public info

This drake just marched into my room, urinated loudly on the floor, then took off in panic crashing into windows and skylights leaving me to clean up his pee. Not a word of apology.
Room with tiled floor and two orange armchairs and a completely not-matching yellow footrest. A drake is just taking off, with head raised, wings fully stretched forward and orange feet dangling just above the floor. Below his little tail, with sweetly curled tail feathers, is a wet splash of urine

This is one of the amazing things about trail cams - we get to recognise and care about wild individuals over a span of years. It’s hard with hedgehogs as their life spans are brutally short these days, but I had a great affection for Aethelflaed, Biff et al before they disappeared

The princess is on day 4 of enforced bed rest after spay surgery and is officially bored. She’s naturally a very effervescent dog so trying to stop her bouncing and rushing about is a challenge.
Airedale terrier looking into the camera with outrageously perky expression, mouth slightly open and a small amount of tongue out. The tiny hairs of her moustache are nicely backlit. She is wearing a pink camo onesie.

In the silliest reason for being a fan, I’ve always supported Goffin because my 125 year old house was built by a family of same name. Not Belgian. In Devon, UK. Their name on beams, and cast metal drain covers.

Oil prices wouldn't be all over the news today if more of our economy was powered by local, secure renewable energy. This isn't an "energy crisis". It's a fossil fuel crisis. 44% of UK electricity came from renewables in 2025. More of that plus an electrified economy => no more oil shocks.
Crude oil prices, showing a very sharp increase in the last day, from around 65 to 101 dollars per barrel..

Can’t think of another hobby that costs the public millions. Plundering our heritage for personal gain, destroying crucial context and if not sold abroad, lost to us in the back of someone’s drawer. The system needs urgent overhaul.

The latest piece of atrocious writing on the BBC website. Though if scabies mites are naked, I guess bed bugs are fully clothed. “In pyjamas” my partner added
Text from BBC website reads “Unlike bed bugs, scabies mites are naked to the human eye, and are not caused by poor hygiene.”
