I realise that, over the years, I’ve taken several versions of basically the same photo looking between the Forth Bridges, now. Sort of pleasing, really, but I can’t really explain why. #bridges #photography #Siblings

Snaps from a quick jaunt over the Forth with the kidbots yesterday, for a little walk and a big lunch.
A bent tree trunk catches a tiny beam of sunlight falling into the otherwise shady glen in which it sits. Behind the tree, is a waterfall. Two kids traipse along a narrow path running across a steep hillside, looking over a small glen on their left. The flat Forth Valley is just visible in the distance, stretching away from us under cloudy skies.Looking up to the sky from under some trees, we see the sun shining out over the top of a big fluffy cloud. The cloud has a brightened edge. A slightly abstract photo of parts of two bridges, shot against a cloudy sky. Across the top of the frame is the structure supporting the deck of the Forth Road Bridge, all grey but with strong contrast from the sunshine which shines part way through the mass of structural elements. Down at the bottom of the frame, part of the red diamand-shaped central tower of the Forth Bridge is visible, in the distance.

No particular reason, but here's a photo I've always loved, which I see I took exactly ten years ago, today. I loved that flat. And that landing, and the stairs. And the parquet floor, gawd... that's one of the best things we've ever made. And Lyra. What a brilliant little cat she was.
A photo taken in a stairwell of a house. Sunlight shines through a doorway off frame to the left, and casts shadows onto the wall on the right of the frame. Before it gets there, though, it highlights a series of slim vertical rails and a wide balustrade on which tiptoes a small ginger and white cat, also rather beautifully highlighted by the low-angle sun. A woman is watching the cat, delighted. The landing is otherwise lit by the cool ambient daylight provided by a couple of square rooflights in the ceiling, but the warm colours of a maple parquet floor mirror the ginger tones of the little cat. It's just a glimpse of a residential landing, but it's a very happy one.

Woke earlier than I was happy with yesterday, so just grabbed the camera and strolled around the block in the hope of seeing something interesting. Not much in terms of pictures, to be honest, but I can’t pretend my neighbourhood isn’t full of nice moments!
A view from beneath some trees, looking out across Holyrood Park, in Edinburgh. The trees under which we stand are all silhouetted, but leafy canopies in the distance are beginning to shift into autumnal colours, and the hillside of Arthur’s Seat looks slightly cool in the early morning lightA cool early-morning photograph of part of the front of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. The clear blue sky casts a very cool ambient light over everything, and water of the reflecting pool in the foreground mirrors it. What we can see of the building is a highly ornate composition of concrete forms, steel struts, wooden sticks, granite walls, and metallic frames to glazing. It’s finely crafted and very carefully composed but also incredibly informal.A sign reflects the golden early morning light on a big square building. MEADOWBANK, THE CITY OF EDINBURGH COUNCIL, it says, in the colour of the dawn.Part of a garden in the early morning light of a day in late September. It’s mostly just shades of green right now, but the variety is still quite pleasing.

No particular reason, but here are some rooflights and/or oculi, from the archive. A cancer support centre, an old bird house, a bank, and an art gallery. Three from Scotland, one from Germany. And honestly the third one isn’t actually American. Really. #Architecture
A view of a cutout in a roof designed to bring daylight down into an interior. It’s lined by a square series of golden metallic panels to reflect of the light, but each of these is also perforated with a graphical pattern of triangular cutouts. This admits textured light through the panels into the interior but also means the reflected light becomes more textured too. Glazing below also features a series of linear frits, and the overall effect becomes a lovely series of gradually increasing graphical textures of light and colour, diffusing the view of the wooden interior.A view of a cutout in a roof designed to bring daylight down into an interior.

A tiny open oculus at the top of this domed doocot/ dovecote admits daylight down into the interior, and that daylight catches the concentric horizontal bands which form the shelves on which birds would sleep.

It looks a bit like a slightly trippy vortex from an old black&white scifi show, perhaps.A view of a series of cutouts in a roof designed to bring daylight down into an interior.

A neoclassical domed ceiling with a glimpse of some of the cornice and heavily decorated arches on the adjacent supporting walls. There’s a lot of ornate plasterwork all over it, and there are rich colours of red, white, blue, and gold.

The main dome, painted a deep blue, features a central circular oculus, but also a series of concentric rings of star-shaped rooflights, all admitting bright daylight.

The whole thing looks very, VERY American, but it’s actually the old main branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, in Edinburgh.A view of a roof designed to bring daylight down into an interior.

A modern roof structure of incredibly thin but also very deep white-painted concrete fins, in radial lines and concentric circles, under a glazed roof, all spanning over a wide circular atrium in an art gallery. It’s a cloudy day outside so the daylight is completely diffuse, but it’s flooding into the atrium all the same, and the thin lines of the window glazing or bottom edges of the structural fins form dark edges in contrast against the bright sky.

An enormous crane ship, parked up on the shore by a little lighthouse. It catches the last of the warm evening sun, and the clouds behind it are beginning to turn pink in the light of the sunset.

This is the Seaway Alfa Lift, and it can sail around the world, lifting items up to 3,000 tons in weight, up to 108m into the air. An extraordinary vessel.A dockside filled with the widely-dispersed industrial bits and pieces you might expect on any modern dockside. There's a three-storey building which presumably houses some kind of control or operations centre, and then a series of lower sheds, various vehicles, a lot of flood lights...

Towering over them all are a series of three-legged bright yellow structures. They're all 'jacket foundations' and are up to 95m tall. They will all sit underwater in the north sea once they're installed, each holding a transition piece and then a tower and then a wind turbine above them. The scale of the things is quite incredible.A fisherman on a dockside, facing away from us. In the distance, across the body of water, are a couple of three-legged bright yellow structures.
