Today is #InternationalMusicDay, a celebration of the place of music in societies around the world. But how did people experience music in the past? 🎶 In the Middle Ages, sound was a fundamental part of religious and everyday life. 1/4

I’ve seen a number of people commenting along the lines of “this is weird even for Oxbridge” and I think it is worth noting that this is way, way outside the Oxbridge norm. The one time I set foot in my doctoral supervisor’s house, she’d twisted her ankle so the seminar met in her living room.

libraries get rid of books. all the time. it’s a standard practice to make room for new books. collections grow but buildings do not. also just because a book is old does not mean it is valuable

Yep. In fact, the real failing of students was when we stopped requiring them to regularly search a library catalogue for their reading and instead produced lists with hyperlinks that students simply had to click. As soon as they have to go off list, they’re lost.

I think one of my main takeaways from #Bibliocon25 is that it's a fools errand trying to build sustainable research infrastructures, particularly on the national level, on the basis of projects with short-term funding and no clear idea of what happens after the end of the funding period.

Intrigued to hear at #Bibliocon25 about several cases in which "traditional" librarian roles have been replaced with media designers, in the context of library-based scholar-led OA publishing and as a research support role in a medical faculty.
