Among the things I collect are scholarly biographies of early medieval English kings, written by friends of mine (most recent acquisition on the right). @proflroach.bsky.social @davidwoodman45.bsky.social @rorynaismith.bsky.social
Three hardback books side by side: "Æthelred the Unready" by Levi Roach, "The First King of England: Æthelstan and the Birth of Kingdom" by David Woodman and "Offa: King of the Mercians" by Rory Naismith.

Sorry but Currywurst with Sauerkraut is an offence against all that is good.
A menu board in a pub listing "Oktoberfest Specials", one of which is Currywurst with Sauerkraut and curried ketchup.

Nice to open a book that I bought out of personal interest and find this. This is why my colleagues and I do what we do. It makes me so happy to read this. (From 'Central Europe: the Death of Civilization and the Life of an Idea' by @ljukic.bsky.social) @ghilondon.bsky.social
A picture of the acknowledgements page of the book mentioned in the tweet, with a highlighted passage: 'The staff of the SSEES Library and the German Historical Institute in London deserve great credit for running the two institutions that did most to facilitate the extensive research that this book required and whose rich shelves were a source of endless curiosity and inspiration.'

Rather amusing find (inscription on house in Scalloway, Shetland). More information here: newcleckitdominie.wordpress.com/2014/07/25/w...
An engraved inscription that reads:

This diagram illustrates the cause of the so called Earth Tides. Also each alternate Ocean Flood, the cause of which has never yet been understood.

RE EARTH TIDES: we are told that the Moon raises the solid surface of the Earth under it about 8 inches and raises the OPPOSITE SIDE 8. This I hold to be impossible. The phenomenon called EARTH TIDE IS CAUSED BY E-H’s WEIGHT PULLING …

[The remainder of this stone has worn but the Geograph contributor was informed that it ended: AGAINST THE SUN’S ATTRACTION.]

The water flows back when att’n over & forms a heap on opposite side of E. to balance att’n flood. There is no …

From a local Facebook group... (As the group is public, I'm not redacting the names).
A string of negative comments on Facebook in response to a link to an article about COVID booster vaccines.

You had me at the first sentence, given that I adore Elif Batuman’s writing.
The text of a book review of “Liquid: a Love Story” by Mariam Rahmani. The text says: “This one’s for the Elif Batuman heads, but make it post-doc. Single and freshly graduated, an unnamed and painfully intelligent Muslim narrator has to face the challenges of real life — applying for competitive jobs in academia, finding a place to live in L.A. After her best friend, Adam, suggests she just “marry rich” to solve her problems, she devotes herself to dating and deciphering class signifiers, studiously tracking her prospects on a spreadsheet — until news of her father’s ailing health sends her to Tehran. Rahmani’s highbrow humor will draw you in, but make sure you stay for the back half — a poetic and yearning contemplation of Iran, belonging, family, and love that is both as enlightening as it is genuinely rare.” The review was written by Jasmine Vojdani, newsletter editor of The Cut.

Yes, tonight's Burns Night cocktail did come with a stick of bacon as a stirrer/garnish.
A glass, filled with an Old Fashioned cocktail and ice cubes as well as a stick of dried bacon as a stirrer.

Scene from Monty Python's "Dead Parrot" sketch with Elon Musk's face superimposed on John Cleese's and the Twitter bird symbol (with the X logo as an eye) instead of the parrot. A speech bubble says "It was alive when you bought it".

Belated Day 4 of 37 Days of Beermas: I was very excited about this sour fruited gose by Ten Men Brewery from Ukraine (!), although in the end it wasn't all that sour, basically it's thick fruit juice (in a good way), just with 7.8% alcohol...

Day 3 of 37 Days of Beermas: back to a warming imperial stout, this one from Dutch brewery Kees. An 11% cognac barrel aged caramel fudge pastry stout, again great for winter but a bit too sweet for my taste. Glad it came in a small can since it's Monday tomorrow...

Day 2 of 37 Days of Beermas: Under the Same Sky, an 8.4% DIPA from Verdant. I've had this one before but who cares - it's a fantastic beer by one of the best breweries in the business.

Day 1 of 37 Days of Beermas: Start as you mean to go on with Cuvée Delphine, a 13% bourbon barrel aged royal stout, just the thing for a cold winter Friday evening.

I’m pleased to see Open Access being discussed on the letters pages of the TLS, but what’s being described here is surely Diamond OA, rather than Green?
