The new transitional insect/crustacean fossil might not look very insectlike, if you think of modern insects like butterflies and beetles, but check out its reconstruction (left) next to a photo of the oldest living lineage of extant insects, the bristetails (right). www.science.org/content/arti...

I’m really excited for this SF! With it we’re trying to combat the positive bias in publishing - how we and reviewers are inclined to only lift up research that goes as expected. But we all know there are so many lessons to be learned when you get unexpected results, or when things don’t work. 🧪

We found this amazing earwig at a bug light last night. This one is a male, they typically have larger pincers. There is not much info available about the genus so I'm not sure why he has those strange protrusions from his abdomen. (Ancistrogaster sp.) Intag Refugio, Ecuador

Bees 🐝
This art features 100 bees of various colors and shapes.
These bees are designed in a cartoonish style, based on real species. The common name or species is written below the animals.
Some bees are moving leaves, scraping plant hair, or sticking out their tongues. Some male bees have hairy faces and unusually shaped legs. There are also baby bees that have just hatched from their petal nests. Cute and colorful atmosphere. There are over 20,000 species of bees, so I only depicted a very small fraction of them!

Arachnid eating another arachnid - this tiny (3 mm.) jumping spider, a female Anasaitis canalis in Costa Rica, is munching on a pseudoscorpion (if you zoom in, you can see one of its claws hanging down). Pseudoscorpions look like super-tiny regular scorpions, but have no tail. 🐙🌿 #Arachtober
A macro photo of a colorful jumping spider perched on decaying wood. The spider is seen from the front and slightly above. It is brown, with a broad yellow stripe on the abdomen. Its palps and chelicerae (jointed mouthpart appendages) are covered in metallic blue scale-like hairs called setae. Its cephalothorax is black, and likewise sprinkled with metallic blue setae. A closer look shows it is dining on a pseudoscorpion, another type of small arachnid; part of its body and one of its pincers is visible below the spider's palps.
