We saw this stuff constantly during and after Metro Surge here in MN; you see it in how Trump has stripped the protected status of Haitians. “You’re in a racial group we detest, but you’re an American or have a legal right to be here. No matter: we’ll simply change the rules, now you’re illegal.”

Part 1/2 of a 7-panel SMBC comic update. A generic version of an American president leans grimly over his desk, stating "we have no cards left to play. It is loss or stalemate. We launch the nuclear arsenal. Now." He then talks about the effects of the fallout for 2 panels: "once our strike is inbound, our foes will return fire. Billions, unsuspecting, reduced to shadows on a concrete wall. In the years that follow, crops will wither under a bituminous sky. And those children who survive infancy will forever bear the mark of the atom in their blood and tissues."Part 2/2 of a 7-panel SMBC comic update. The president concludes "Whatever world emerges, civilization shall not." An employee standing behind him asks "mr. president, I ask you to hesitate. Just for a moment." The president grants him 5 minutes, during which the employee bets on a prediction market app on his phone that there will be thermonuclear wold war before the end of the year."

3-panel SMBC comic update. A man is checking news headlines on his phone, with the first stating "president raises tariffs; deports workers; starts war." The man says "woops," still looking down at his phone. The final panel shows a scene from earlier, where the man is wishing on a monkey's paw: "Monkey's Paw, I wish people cared about basic economics." One of the fingers on the paw curls ominously.

Like, regulations that establish decreasing density at arbitrary distances from higher-order transit stations are pure political compromises, with no scientific evidence, and a caricature of how market forces work (or how laypeople think they work).

A domestic violence charge was made public against a local McMinnville city councilor, Dan Tucholsky. That alone was crazy, but now he's come unglued and publicly threatened people on Facebook. He's a NIMBY, so I can't say I'm sad to see his political career implode, but wow.
A screenshot of a Facebook post by McMinnville city councilor Dan Tucholsky after he was arraigned on domestic violence charges. The post reads:

"On Tuesday I'm prepared to own the shit I didn't do but I'm accused of doing so I can keep peace in my broken family and make the best for my two alienated and Brainwashed boys. Fuck all of you bitches who went along with her victim narrative. I know who you are. I inform people. I'm not done with you. Standby. I know who you are. Prepare. I've been punched in the face by her and bleed and bruised on multiple instances on multiple days by her, even in front of our children, with absolutely no return of any violence from me with written evidence in her handwritten journals which I can provide as evidence. Judge me. It's her story in court. It's not the real story. It's a half truth. Aka a full lie."

GGWash: Zoning doesn't decide if housing is "affordable" - funding does, and that can happen anytime, even after a building opens. So opposing market-rate housing to "save room" for subsidized housing is incoherent: you can't subsidize a building that never gets built. ggwash.org/view/104401/...

every 6 months the Trump administration realizes lowering tariffs will lower prices, applies this insight to one specific good, and then proceeds to never introspect beyond that. It’s honestly beautiful in its stupidity.
Today, I concluded a deal to substantially lower the price of ground beef for working American families. As everyone knows, under President Biden, beef prices soared at their fastest rate and the American beef herd fell to its smallest size in modern history. As we work to rebuild this herd and help our ranchers, for the next 90 days, the United States will allow up to 300,000 metric tons of product for ground beef to be imported with no out of quota tariff. We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices. This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

I'm currently sitting in McMinnville City Hall for testimony on a new housing project (I was in favor). What strikes me is how much support there is. A lot of the opposition keeps reusing the same NIMBY talking points, and seem somewhat confused that they aren't working. They seem blindsided.
